Role Overview
The Retail Assistant is responsible for delivering an exceptional customer experience while supporting the day-to-day operation of the Honister retail shop.
The role requires excellent customer service skills, enthusiasm, attention to detail and a proactive approach to maintaining high retail standards. The Retail Assistant plays an important role in creating a welcoming environment, promoting Honister products and ensuring the shop remains clean, well stocked and visually appealing.
Working closely with the Retail Manager, the Retail Assistant will contribute to achieving sales targets, maintaining stock accuracy and ensuring every visitor receives a positive and memorable experience.
Core Responsibilities
Customer Service
The Retail Assistant is responsible for delivering outstanding customer service throughout the visitor experience.
Responsibilities include:
- Greeting every customer in a friendly, welcoming and professional manner.
- Providing knowledgeable advice on Honister products, gifts and experiences.
- Assisting customers with purchases and product enquiries.
- Processing sales accurately using the EPOS system.
- Handling cash and card transactions in accordance with company procedures.
- Processing refunds and exchanges in line with company policy.
- Supporting customers with bespoke orders where required.
- Promoting additional products and encouraging upselling opportunities.
- Ensuring every customer leaves with a positive impression of Honister.
Retail Operations
The Retail Assistant is responsible for supporting the efficient day-to-day running of the shop.
Responsibilities include:
- Replenishing stock throughout the day.
- Monitoring stock levels and reporting shortages to the Retail Manager.
- Assisting with stock deliveries and checking goods received.
- Pricing and labelling products accurately.
- Supporting regular stock counts and inventory checks.
- Preparing customer orders for collection or dispatch.
- Assisting with online orders where required.
Shop Presentation
Maintaining high presentation standards is a key part of the role.
Responsibilities include:
- Keeping shelves fully stocked and attractively displayed.
- Ensuring all displays remain clean, tidy and well presented.
- Maintaining accurate pricing and promotional signage.
- Keeping customer areas clean and free from hazards.
- Supporting seasonal merchandising and promotional displays.
- Taking pride in the appearance of the retail environment.
Housekeeping
Retail Assistants are expected to contribute to maintaining high standards across the retail environment.
Responsibilities include:
- Cleaning display areas, shelving and counters.
- Keeping stockrooms clean and organised.
- Emptying bins and maintaining waste disposal areas.
- Assisting with opening and closing cleaning duties.
- Supporting general housekeeping throughout the shop.
- Assisting with wider site presentation where operationally required.
Team Responsibilities
The Retail Assistant is expected to:
- Work collaboratively with the Retail Manager and wider Honister team.
- Support colleagues during busy trading periods.
- Communicate effectively with other departments.
- Assist with training and supporting new team members where appropriate.
- Demonstrate flexibility by supporting other operational areas when required.
- Maintain a positive, professional and approachable attitude.
Health & Safety
The Retail Assistant must:
- Follow all company Health & Safety policies and procedures.
- Maintain safe working practices at all times.
- Report hazards, defects or accidents immediately.
- Follow manual handling procedures when moving stock.
- Ensure customer walkways remain safe and unobstructed.
- Wear appropriate uniform and maintain a professional appearance.
Time Management & Productivity
The Retail Assistant is expected to manage their time effectively throughout each shift.
Responsibilities include:
- Prioritising customer service while completing daily operational tasks.
- Adhering to allocated break times and returning promptly.
- Maintaining productivity during quieter trading periods by completing cleaning, stock replenishment and merchandising tasks.
- Managing workload efficiently throughout the day.
- Seeking additional tasks from the Retail Manager once allocated duties have been completed.
