Full job description

Job purpose

MS-Group is creating a new, standalone Health & Safety Officer role. Health and safety has, to date, been led by the Operations Director alongside their other duties. As the group has grown, this is no longer sustainable the business needs a dedicated specialist to own health and safety day to day, free up the Operations Director's time, and bring consistent, professional practice across all sites and branches.

The role is standalone there is no direct team but the Health & Safety Officer will work closely with a nominated Health & Safety representative in each part of the business, who help implement changes and actions locally, and with an external retained health and safety advisor that visits across the year to carry out formal risk assessments. The Officer is responsible for translating the outputs of both into practical, embedded improvement across the group.

Key responsibilities

Act as the group's day-to-day point of contact and owner for health and safety matters, working across all 3 office/production sites and 11 memorial branches.

Build and support a network of Health & Safety representatives one per part of the business providing them with guidance, training and clear actions so they can implement change locally.

Coordinate visits from the external Health & Safety body, ensure risk assessments are scheduled, hosted, and their findings understood by site teams.

Track, prioritise and follow up on actions arising from external risk assessments and internal audits, keeping a live risk register and reporting progress to the Operations Director.

Maintain and update the group's health and safety policies, procedures and site-specific risk assessments between external visits.

Carry out regular site visits, walk-arounds and spot checks across production sites and memorial branches to monitor compliance and identify emerging risks.

Manage accident, incident and near-miss reporting, including RIDDOR reporting where required, and lead on root-cause investigation.

Deliver or coordinate health and safety induction and refresher training for staff and representatives across the group.

Advise on specific risks relevant to production and workshop environments, including manual handling, machinery, dust and COSHH, as well as branch-based customer-facing risks.

Keep up to date with relevant UK health and safety legislation and ensure the group's practices remain compliant.

Report regularly to the Operations Director and senior leadership on health and safety performance, incidents and outstanding risk actions.

Promote a positive, practical safety culture across a geographically spread business.

Working relationships

Operations Director line manager; escalation point for resourcing, budget and strategic decisions.

Site/branch Health & Safety representatives the Officer's main delivery network; not direct reports, but the people who implement change locally.

External retained Health & Safety advisor visits across the year to complete formal risk assessments; the Officer manages this relationship and ensures findings are actioned.

Site and branch managers day-to-day contacts for compliance, incidents and local risk issues.

Person specification

Essential

NEBOSH General Certificate (or equivalent recognised health and safety qualification).

Some practical experience in a health and safety role, ideally 13 years, gained in a multi-site, production, manufacturing or retail environment.

Working knowledge of UK health and safety legislation, including the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, RIDDOR, COSHH and manual handling regulations.

Confident, clear communicator, comfortable influencing and supporting non-specialist representatives and managers across the business.

Comfortable working independently in a standalone role, managing a varied workload without a specialist team around them.

Well organised, practical, and able to prioritise across multiple sites and competing demands.

Full, valid UK driving licence and willingness to travel regularly to sites and branches.

Desirable

Working towards, or holding, a NEBOSH Diploma.

Experience working with an external health and safety consultancy or auditing body.

Experience in a business with both production/workshop sites and customer-facing branches.

Salary and benefits

Salary of £32,000£38,000, dependent on experience.

Mileage for travel between sites and branches.
