Full job description

Location: Community-Based Tuition – Stanground Library, Peterborough (PE2)

Hours: 15 Hours Per Week (3 hours per day × 5 days)

Times: 9.30am start, finishing by 2pm

Start Date: 3 September 2026

Duration: Ongoing until a specialist school placement is confirmed

Focus: Early Communication, Engagement, Regulation & Readiness for Learning

About the Role

Study Mind is looking for a calm, patient and highly experienced Early Years SEN Tutor to deliver 1:1 provision for a Reception-aged pupil with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Rather than focusing on academic intervention, this placement is designed to build the foundations. The pupil has never attended any education setting, and this will be his first sustained experience of learning alongside an adult outside his family. The priority is communication, engagement, regulation and trust.

This is a highly rewarding opportunity for someone who understands that for a child at this stage, a shared moment of connection is the progress.

About the Student

Our student is a curious, determined and very active five year old who loves to explore. He has an EHC Plan naming all four areas of need, and is awaiting a place at a local special school for children with autism.

He is described by his family as chilled and easy-going once he feels safe, but he needs time to get to know a new adult before he will let them in.

He communicates using approximately six to twenty single words and is beginning to combine two or three words together. His speech can be difficult to understand, and he has significant receptive language difficulties, meaning he may not respond when spoken to or when his name is called. He is developing non-verbal requesting through pointing and tugging.

He becomes frustrated quickly if he is not understood, and this can escalate into unsafe behaviour. He is extremely impulsive with no sense of danger, runs constantly, opens doors and likes to hide. He thrives on routine and becomes significantly distressed by change.

The overall aim is to build his communication, engagement and regulation so that he is ready to access his specialist placement when it is confirmed.

The Role Will Include:-

Delivering a personalised 1:1 Early Years programme in a community setting. Establishing a consistent, predictable daily routine supported by visual timetables. Using a Total Communication approach with objects of reference and visuals, working towards symbols. Developing a communication board to support non-verbal expression. Delivering Attention Autism and Experiential Learning activities. Using Intensive Interaction at key points in the session. Providing close, continuous supervision to manage safety. Building trust patiently over an extended settling-in period. Providing structured progress updates to the family and Local Authority.

The Ideal Tutor Will Have Experience Supporting Children With

Autism Spectrum Disorder in the Early Years Pre-verbal or minimally verbal communication Significant receptive language difficulties Sensory processing differences and sensory seeking behaviour Biting, self-injurious behaviour and unsafe impulsivity Absconding risk and safety management Significant global developmental delay EYFS-level provision within specialist settings

Experience of Attention Autism, Intensive Interaction, Makaton or PECS would be highly advantageous, as would experience of building provision from scratch for a child with no prior school experience.

Student Interests

Building rapport through the student's interests will be an important part of the role.

He enjoys:

Cars, including lining them up and sorting by size or colour Motorbikes, and watching bin lorries and traffic Animals and animal-matching games Kinetic sand and messy play Colouring and mark-making Spinning, climbing and running circuits Music and movement Water play and bubbles

Teaching Approach

The successful tutor will:

Prioritise trust and relationship-building long before introducing challenge. Use small, repetitive steps with heavy modelling and errorless learning approaches. Follow Now and Next or First and Then visual schedules. Build frequent movement breaks into every session, as he has very high energy. Maintain a calm, predictable and low-arousal learning environment. Recognise dysregulation as communication rather than challenging behaviour. Use co-regulation strategies rather than compliance-based approaches. Reduce demands when needed before gently returning to learning. Respect his strong dislike of physical touch at all times. Keep him within constant line of sight, given the community venue.

What We're Looking For

We're seeking a tutor who is:

Exceptionally patient, and comfortable with slow, non-linear progress. Experienced in Early Years specialist or SEN provision. Confident using visuals, objects of reference and Total Communication. Trained or trainable in positive behaviour support. Calm, gentle and unhurried in presentation. Physically able to keep pace with a child who moves constantly. Comfortable delivering in a community venue with public footfall. Reliable and consistent, as continuity will matter enormously to this child.

There is no gender preference for this placement and male tutors are welcome to apply. The pupil is wary of men, so a male tutor would need to be especially patient, kind and gentle while trust is established. Once he is comfortable, he settles well.

Tuition Details

Location: Face-to-face, community-based tuition at Stanground Library, Peterborough (PE2), within a calm, low-arousal space.

Hours: 15 hours per week 3-hour sessions across 5 days 9.30am start, finishing by 2pm

Start Date: 3 September 2026

Duration: Ongoing until a specialist autism school placement is confirmed. No fixed end date.

Requirements: Enhanced DBS on the update service. Relevant SEN and Early Years experience essential.
