Full job description

We are excited to offer this opportunity for a Translational Research Technician to join the RISE (Reducing Immune Stress from Excess cytokine release in advanced therapies) programme Medical Research Council (MRC) - funded research consortium focused on generating the evidence, tools and translational science needed to optimise, predict and mitigate toxicity from advanced cell and immunotherapies in cancer.

The post holder will be responsible for coordinating the day-to-day processing of clinical samples, including but not limited to blood and stool samples, collected from patients receiving CAR-T therapy or other immunotherapies as part of a prospective observational study. They will support a cross-institution research team to collect, log and process clinical samples for further downstream analysis.

This role is offered at a 1.0FTE fixed term for 4 years. On-site presence is expected for sample processing, key meetings, and consortium activities, given the collaborative and laboratory-facing nature of the role. Flexible hybrid working arrangements can be discussed where appropriate.

About RISE

RISE is led by Dr Jonathan Lim, Clinical Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant Medical

Oncologist at The University of Manchester and The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, and brings

together academic and clinical partners across Manchester alongside four industry partners.

RISE is an MRC-funded national Prosperity Partnership bringing together academia, NHS and industry partners to address a critical unmet need in advanced immune and cell therapies. These advanced therapies including CAR-T, TCR-T and TIL therapies have transformed cancer outcomes, however their wider adoption is limited by serious acute and chronic toxicities, particularly cytokine release syndrome (CRS) and neurotoxicity. Current management strategies remain reactive rather than preventative, and long-term pharmacovigilance frameworks are poorly defined.

RISE integrates mechanistic discovery science, clinical translational research and scalable technology platforms to identify and validate biomarkers and develop predictive and preventative strategies for safer implementation of advanced therapies. The programme comprises a prospective observational study of patients receiving standard-of-care CAR-T therapy and a parallel Phase 2 clinical trial evaluating a novel CRS-mitigation strategy. Longitudinal multimodal data will be generated across immune profiling, multi-omics, wearable monitoring and patient- reported outcomes, supported by artificial intelligence/machine learning modelling. The University of Manchester is the lead institution for RISE, working in partnership with academic groups within the Manchester ecosystem, The Christie NHS Foundation Trust and four industry partners.
