We are looking for an experienced and technically competent Technical Manager to lead our technical support, auditing, compliance, and training functions. This is a key role within the business, responsible for maintaining high technical standards across our engineering team while ensuring consistent, compliant inspection reporting and customer service excellence.
The Role
As Technical Manager, you will act as the company's technical authority on Thorough Examinations, supporting engineers, customers, and internal stakeholders on all technical matters relating to lifting equipment inspections.
You will oversee engineer auditing, report quality, technical training, competency sign-off, and continuous improvement initiatives, helping to drive consistency and compliance across the business.
This role is primarily based from our Castle Donington office, with regular travel throughout the UK, including occasional overnight stays.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership
- Act as the primary technical support for all Thorough Examination-related matters.
- Provide expert advice to engineers and customers on lifting equipment regulations and compliance.
- Attend UKMHA Technical Committee meetings and communicate updates across the business.
- Develop and maintain technical standards, guidance notes, and internal procedures.
Auditing & Compliance
- Conduct field-based and desk-based audits of engineers and inspection reports.
- Review inspection reports to ensure compliance, consistency, and technical accuracy.
- Identify trends, recurring issues, and opportunities for improvement.
- Monitor KPIs and produce technical performance reports.
Training & Development
- Oversee engineer competency assessments and sign-off processes.
- Develop and deliver technical training programmes.
- Support the onboarding and development of new engineers.
- Evaluate training effectiveness and implement improvements where required.
Quality & Continuous Improvement
- Develop and maintain quality assurance procedures.
- Support improvements to inspection and reporting systems.
- Work closely with software providers and internal teams to enhance reporting tools.
- Support business development activities with technical expertise and client engagement.
About You
Essential
- Minimum 5 years' experience carrying out Thorough Examinations.
- Strong technical knowledge of lifting equipment and relevant legislation.
- Experience auditing, reviewing, or quality checking inspection reports.
- Excellent understanding of LOLER, PUWER, and industry best practice.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Confident training, coaching, and mentoring engineers.
- Full UK driving licence.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office and IT systems.
- Willingness to travel and stay away overnight when required.
Desirable
- Previous experience in a technical, lead, supervisory, or management role.
- Experience attending industry working groups or technical committees.
- Experience developing training materials and competency frameworks.
- Knowledge of UKMHA GN28 guidance.
