Setting Out Engineer

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Setting Out Engineer to join our growing team. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring construction projects are accurately set out and delivered to the highest standards. This position requires excellent technical knowledge, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with site teams to ensure projects are completed safely, on time, and within specification.

Key Responsibilities

Carry out accurate setting out for construction works using GPS, total stations, and other surveying equipment.
Interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and site plans.
Establish site control points, benchmarks, and reference grids.
Verify dimensions, levels, and alignments before and during construction.
Monitor construction progress and ensure work complies with design specifications and tolerances.
Produce and maintain accurate site records, surveys, and as-built information.
Liaise with project managers, site managers, subcontractors, and designers to resolve technical issues.
Conduct quality assurance checks and assist with inspections.
Ensure all work is carried out in accordance with health and safety regulations.
Support project planning by identifying potential engineering challenges and proposing practical solutions.

Essential Qualifications

Degree or HNC/HND in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, Surveying, or a related discipline.
Valid CSCS Card.
SMSTS or SSSTS certification
Full UK Driving Licence.
First Aid at Work certificate

Essential Experience

Proven experience working as a Setting Out Engineer on civil engineering, infrastructure, groundworks, or building projects.
Strong understanding of construction methods, engineering principles, and site practices.
Experience using Leica, Trimble, or Topcon surveying equipment.
Competent in using AutoCAD and interpreting engineering drawings.
Experience carrying out topographical surveys and producing as-built records.
Knowledge of quality control procedures and construction tolerances.

Skills & Knowledge

Excellent understanding of the role and responsibilities of a Setting Out Engineer.
Strong mathematical and analytical skills.
High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
Strong organisational and time management abilities.
Confident problem-solver with a proactive approach.
Good knowledge of health and safety legislation and industry best practices.
