Introduction
iST Power is looking for an Electrical Test Engineer to join our Leicester production team. This is a hands-on factory-based role testing specialist transformers, reactors and wound components used on critical infrastructure projects. The role offers exposure to bespoke products, high-voltage testing and technically challenging projects in a growing UK manufacturing business.
Role Overview
You will be responsible for carrying out routine and type testing on transformers, reactors and wound components, ensuring products are tested safely, accurately and in accordance with BS EN, IEC, customer and internal quality requirements.
Our Leicester facility works on a wide range of bespoke and technically varied products. The role therefore requires a practical understanding of electrical testing, attention to detail and the confidence to work safely within a high-voltage test area. This is a role where the quality of the test work directly supports customer confidence, product release and the reputation of a specialist UK transformer manufacturer.
The role is primarily factory-based at our Leicester site, with occasional travel to our Manchester facility where project support, FAT attendance or testing assistance may be required.
Key Responsibilities
Your responsibilities will include:
- Performing routine electrical testing on transformers, reactors and wound components.
- Completing voltage ratio, vector group, winding resistance and insulation resistance tests.
- Carrying out copper loss, iron loss, over-potential, flash and high-voltage testing.
- Supporting partial discharge testing and other specialist test activities where required.
- Assisting design and engineering teams with the testing of new or bespoke products.
- Preparing accurate test records, FAT documentation and customer-facing test certificates.
- Ensuring all testing is completed safely within a controlled HV test environment.
- Maintaining test documentation in line with ISO 9001 procedures, BS EN/IEC standards and customer specifications.
- Supporting fault-finding and technical investigations where issues arise during production or test.
- Liaising with production, design, project and quality teams to ensure products meet the required standard before release.
Qualifications & Skills
Essential Skills and Experience
The successful candidate should have:
- Previous electrical test experience in a production, manufacturing, transformer, switchgear, panel build, electrical machinery or similar environment.
- The ability to read electrical drawings, wiring diagrams and written test procedures.
- A practical understanding of AC electrical theory.
- Experience using electrical test instruments safely and accurately.
- An appreciation of working safely in or around HV test areas.
- Good attention to detail and the ability to complete test records accurately.
- Strong communication, teamwork and problem-solving skills.
- A practical, hands-on approach to engineering.
- Right to work in the UK.
- Ability to work five days a week from our Leicester factory.
A minimum BTEC, ONC, NVQ or equivalent qualification in Electrical Engineering would be beneficial, although relevant practical experience will also be considered.
Desirable Experience
The following would be advantageous:
- Experience testing transformers, reactors, wound components or electrical distribution equipment.
- Experience completing FAT documentation or customer test certificates.
- Experience working to BS EN, IEC or customer-specific test requirements.
- Experience supporting FATs with customers, inspectors or third-party witnesses.
- Ability to work independently when required.
