Maintenance Operative
Location: Wisbech PE13
Salary: £34,400 per annum
Hours: 40 hours per week, 52 weeks per year
Working Pattern: Monday to Friday, 8 hours per day, plus 130 additional hours worked at weekends on a rota basis
Contract: Full-time, permanent
About the Role
We are seeking a practical and versatile Maintenance Operative to join the Maintenance Services team at a busy school.
The Maintenance team is responsible for carrying out both planned and reactive maintenance across the school site, ensuring the buildings, facilities and grounds remain safe, functional and well maintained.
This is a varied, hands-on role and would suit someone with good all-round maintenance skills who enjoys a practical role where no two days are necessarily the same.
You will work alongside a team of maintenance specialists, supporting across different areas as required. While some specialist works are undertaken by external contractors, the successful candidate will be expected to use their own initiative and provide general maintenance support across the school.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out planned and reactive maintenance tasks across the school site.
- Undertake general handyman and building maintenance duties.
- Repair and replace door handles, locks, fixtures and fittings.
- Assemble and install furniture and equipment.
- Carry out basic plumbing tasks and minor repairs.
- Undertake low-level electrical maintenance where appropriately trained and competent.
- Assist with general repairs, maintenance and upkeep of school buildings and facilities.
- Respond to maintenance requests and complete allocated jobs efficiently.
- Work independently or as part of the wider Maintenance Services team, depending on the task.
- Support maintenance specialists and external contractors when required.
- Help ensure the school environment is safe, secure and well presented.
- Follow relevant health and safety procedures and school policies at all times.
- Carry out other reasonable maintenance duties as required.
About You
The successful candidate will ideally have:
- Previous experience in a maintenance, facilities, handyman or similar practical role.
- Good general DIY and maintenance skills.
- Basic plumbing knowledge and experience.
- Basic electrical knowledge and experience, where appropriately qualified.
- The ability to undertake general building repairs and furniture assembly.
- A practical, hands-on approach and good problem-solving skills.
- The ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Good organisational skills and the ability to prioritise daily tasks.
- A flexible approach, with a willingness to assist across different areas of the school.
- Good communication skills and a professional manner.
- A strong awareness of health and safety.
- The ability to work in a busy school environment and interact appropriately with staff, contractors and other members of the school community.
