JOB DESCRIPTION:

Job Title: Independent Mental Health Advocate (IMHA)
Salary: £25,000 – £26,000 per year (FTE) - depending on experience
Hours: Full-time (37 hours per week)
Contract: Fixed-term for 2 years (extension subject to funding)
Location: Office-based in Derby City with travel to inpatient units, community mental health teams, and other settings
Reports to: Advocacy Services Manager
Requirement: Must hold Level 4 Independent Advocacy Qualification with IMHA specialism
Travel: Must have access to own vehicle – mileage reimbursed

About the Service

Disability Direct Advocacy is commissioned by Derby City Council to deliver Independent Advocacy in Derby City.

We provide specialist independent advocacy support focused on one-to-one, issue-based advocacy services.

Disability Direct Advocacy delivers the Independent Mental Capacity Advocacy service (IMCA) including the Relevant Persons Paid Representative Role (RPPR) under the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS), the Independent Mental Health Advocacy service (IMHA), Independent Advocacy under Care Act 2014, NHS Complaints Advocacy and Non-statutory Advocacy in Derby City.

Role Purpose

The IMHA will support eligible patients to understand and exercise their rights who are detained under the Mental Health Act. The advocate will ensure the individual’s views and wishes are represented in care planning, ward rounds, and treatment decisions at the individual's request.

Key Responsibilities

Deliver statutory IMHA advocacy in line with the prevailing Mental Health Act Code of Practice.
Work with detained patients, CTO patients, and informal patients eligible for IMHA support.
Ability to work independently on mental health wards including, Forensic, Psychiatric Intensive Care Units (PICU).
Provide clear information on rights, safeguards, tribunal processes, and treatment options.
At the patient's request, support them at ward rounds, and medication reviews.
Build trusting relationships with patients who may be distressed, unwell, or lacking insight.
Challenge clinical decisions and case management practices respectfully and appropriately.
Request and review medical, clinical, and social care records with appropriate authorisation.
Prepare high-quality written reports and representations based on the patient’s views where needed.
Ensure all advocacy work is person-led, rights‑based, and free from conflict of interest.
Support people to raise complaints or concerns regarding treatment or conditions of detention.
Maintain accurate case notes and documentation within agreed timeframes.
Establish effective relationships with ward staff, mental health professionals, and family members where appropriate.
Promote the IMHA service on wards and in community mental health settings.
Arrange interpreters or communication support as required.
Participate in reflective practice, supervision, and team meetings.
Ability to support other areas of advocacy where appropriate.

Person Specification

Essential

Level 4 Independent Advocacy Qualification with IMHA specialism.
Strong understanding of the Mental Health Act, tribunal processes, and patient rights.
Ability to communicate clearly and sensitively with people experiencing mental ill health.
Experience working in mental health, social care, or advocacy environments.
Confidence in challenging decisions while maintaining professional boundaries.
Excellent written skills with the ability to produce clear, concise advocacy reports.
Ability to work flexibly across wards, community settings, and individual appointments.
Good IT skills including Word, Excel, and case management systems.
Full driving licence and access to own vehicle.
Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills.

Desirable

Previous experience working with Adult Social Care, NHS clinical teams, safeguarding, or multidisciplinary settings.
Training or proficiency in BSL, Makaton, or alternative communication methods.

Disclosure and Barring Service

In accordance with Disability Direct policy, the successful candidate will be subject to an enhanced screening by the DBS.

Probation Period

3 months – with possible extension if performance review is required.
