Lindstrand Industries is a specialist UK manufacturer operating at the intersection of aerospace engineering, inflatable structures and advanced technical textile systems.
We design and deliver aerostats, pressure-based structures, and bespoke engineered solutions for demanding aerospace, defence and industrial applications.
Our work is highly practical, hands-on and engineering-driven — requiring robust thinking, ownership and strong execution.
The Role
We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer (Aerospace / Lightweight Structures) with the capability to take a leading role in engineering activities, combining hands-on design with technical leadership and team support.
You will be responsible for defining engineering solutions, guiding design direction, and ensuring the technical integrity of products, working closely with CAD engineers and production teams who support implementation.
This role would suit an experienced engineer looking to take on significant responsibility and play a central role in engineering delivery.
Role Overview
You will take ownership of mechanical design activities across aerostats, inflatable structures, lifting systems and associated equipment — from concept through to validation and production.
The role includes:
- System-level design and engineering decision-making
- Development of robust and manufacturable solutions
- Collaboration across engineering, CAD and production
- Technical guidance and support to team members
You will operate across structural behaviour, mechanical systems, pressure-based designs and material interfaces.
Due to the specialised nature of our products, experience in aerospace or lightweight/pressure-based structures is particularly important for this role.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead mechanical design activities from concept through to production
- Define and drive engineering solutions across structures, materials, mechanisms and systems
- Take ownership of design direction, engineering decisions and technical outcomes
- Provide technical guidance, mentoring and support to CAD/design engineers
- Review and approve CAD models, drawings and engineering documentation
- Work closely with production to ensure manufacturability and resolve technical challenges
- Support prototyping, testing and validation activities
- Participate in design reviews, risk assessments and engineering planning
- Contribute to continuous improvement of engineering processes and team capability
Required Experience & Skills
- Strong background in mechanical engineering with experience delivering complete product designs
- Experience in aerospace, aerostructures, inflatable structures, or other lightweight / pressure-based mechanical systems is required
- Proven ability to take ownership of engineering problems and deliver practical solutions
- Solid understanding of structures, materials, mechanisms and tolerancing
- Experience working with manufacturing processes (machining, fabrication, welded assemblies)
- Ability to operate at system level and manage complex assemblies and interfaces
- Experience guiding, mentoring or supporting other engineers
- Practical, hands-on and problem-solving mindset
- Working knowledge of 3D CAD tools (Autodesk preferred)
Desirable
- Familiarity with technical textiles or non-conventional structures
- FEA or structural analysis capability
- Knowledge of GD&T, compliance or regulated environments
Working Style
This role requires regular on-site involvement due to the hands-on and collaborative nature of the work.
Flexible or hybrid arrangements may be considered depending on experience and project needs.
What We Offer
- Competitive salary (aligned with experience and level)
- A high degree of technical ownership and influence
- Opportunity to work on unique, non-conventional engineering challenges
- Involvement across the full product lifecycle
- A collaborative, hands-on engineering environment
- Scope for the role to grow in responsibility over time
