Full job description

We are looking for a paralegal to support Amy Chater's Court of Protection (Property & Finance) team. Amy is a Partner in the firm and is appointed by the Court of Protection to act as professional Deputy for clients who lack mental capacity to make decisions relating to their property and finances. The majority of Amy's clients have experienced traumatic brain injury from clinical negligence or personal injury which has affected their mental capacity and their ability to make decisions, or manage any related compensation/other finances. Amy also acts as a professional Trustee for clients with compensation awards who need further support and assistance managing the funds but don't require a Deputy.

The successful applicant will assist the team in supporting these clients. The main responsibility of the team is to support the clients to manage their damages and compensation awards, and any other income as required, to ensure they receive the care, financial management and support they need. This role is likely to involve regular contact with clients and their families, so empathy and professionalism are essential.

We welcome applicants from a wide range of backgrounds, particularly graduates who are compassionate, organised and keen to learn with strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.

A paralegal within the Court of Protection team is expected to:

Provide reliable and efficient support to fee-earners in the team.
Undertake a wide variety of administrative tasks.
Assist with drafting court applications, client liaison, creating and organising case files, general correspondence, and administrative support.
Assist with financial management, payments, budgeting and interim billing.
Undertake ad-hoc duties as required from time to time which could include work on other matters such as drafting Lasting Powers of Attorney, supporting with preparation of professional Deputy expert costs reports or drafting Court applications to appoint lay deputies .
In the absence of supervising fee-earner, ensure that urgent matters are referred to the appropriate personnel.

What you'll bring:

Essential

Strong academic background.
Genuine interest in working with clients who lack mental capacity.
Ability to deal sensitively with colleagues and management, clients and other parties.
Strong IT skills including MS Word, Excel, Outlook.
Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
Ability to work in an organised and methodical manner under pressure, with a positive attitude
Good team player, pro-active, reliable and friendly approach.

Desirable

Experience or knowledge of Court of Protection work (property and financial affairs)
Experience managing deputyships for clients with high value compensation and damages awards.
Legal experience including drafting and liaising with medical professionals, financial institutions and solicitors.
