We are seeking to appoint a Senior Laboratory Science Technician

Full Time - 36.5 Hour Per Week. May include occasional saturdays, evenings and college open day duties.

Introduction

The College has four faculties and each has a Faculty Head, Deputy Faculty Head and a number of Heads of School. The faculty management team has a strategic and operational responsibility for the management and delivery of course programmes within a group of college departments. Each faculty will work within a remit specific to their area. The remit will outline the key focus areas for each faculty and will be subject to review by the College to reflect the goals, aims and strategic objectives and priorities within FE and the College.

Curriculum departments are grouped into faculties. The Head of School has a primary responsibility for the specific department and of individuals within a team, while the Faculty Head holds primary responsibility for the whole faculty and its targets

Aims of Job/Job Purpose

The post holder will provide technical support for science courses based in the Science, Access and A Level programme areas, including supporting the science team to ensure effective and efficient curriculum delivery and keeping an accurate inventory of equipment and consumables

Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities

Make up solutions and assemble apparatus for practical sessions and ensure preparation of practicals for other lab technicians in the team are completed to deadline.
Keep laboratories and clinics clean and tidy and maintain the prep room in an orderly condition.
Keep financial records, lead on stock control and monitor expenditure
Work with the Head of School to prioritise training in the science department
Meet with lab technicians weekly and make sure quality procedures are being followed.
Providing technical assistance to teachers, new technicians and students including suggesting alternative procedures or equipment where applicable.
Complete and update risk assessments for practical activities and COSSH records for all chemicals. Audit these records for other lab technicians/campuses.
Have a good understanding of safe treatment and disposal of waste materials including hazardous substances.
Liaise with the local fire service and other relevant external parties in relation to radioactive materials.
Coordinate the assessment, monitoring and review of equipment and practicals on a daily basis (including PPE) to make sure staff and students are operating in a safe working environment at all times.
Liaise with lab technicians to monitor and arrange servicing requirements across all campuses
Keeping up to date with developments in practical science and Health & safety requirements.
Attend Divisional meetings & the college’s health and safety meetings and monitor health and safety in the science laboratories at all times.
Undertake first aid duties and be responsible for updating first aid qualification as and when necessary.
Support teachers on open days and other important extra-curricular events.
Ensure continuity of subscriptions to important bodies e.g. Cleapss.
Any other duties, which are commensurate with the grade and nature of the post.
