What is Aviation NDT?
Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) is a range of inspection techniques used to assess the condition and integrity of materials, structures and components without causing damage.
In aviation, NDT is essential for maintaining aircraft safety and airworthiness. NDT technicians inspect aircraft structures, engines, landing gear, components and repairs to identify defects such as cracks, corrosion, fatigue damage and material flaws before they become safety risks.
Typical aviation NDT methods include:
- Ultrasonic Testing (UT)
- Bond Testing
- Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI)
- Dye Penetrant Inspection (DPI/PT)
- Radiographic Testing (RT)

Overall Purpose of the Role
The Apprentice Aviation NDT Technician will learn and assist qualified technicians in carrying out in-service and pre-service Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) inspections on aircraft, aerospace components and associated equipment.
Working within a live airport and aircraft maintenance environment, the apprentice will gain practical experience using industry-standard inspection techniques while learning aviation regulations, safety requirements and quality standards. The role offers the opportunity to develop specialist technical skills and work towards recognised NDT qualifications within the aviation sector.
Key Responsibilities
The Apprentice Aviation NDT Technician will:
- Assist qualified technicians in carrying out NDT inspections on aircraft structures, components and systems in accordance with company procedures, client requirements and aviation regulations.
- Learn and apply a range of NDT techniques, with a focus on:
- Ultrasonic Testing (UT)
- Bond Testing
- Gain exposure to additional inspection methods, including:
- Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI)
- Dye Penetrant Inspection (DPI/PT)
- Radiographic Testing (RT)
- Assist with inspections of metallic and composite aircraft structures and components.
- Support qualified technicians in conducting inspections within aircraft hangars, maintenance facilities and live airport environments.
- Assist in the inspection of incoming materials, tools and equipment prior to use.
- Learn how to interpret engineering drawings, maintenance manuals, task cards and inspection procedures.
- Develop an understanding of aviation quality standards, airworthiness requirements and regulatory compliance.
- Learn how to complete inspection records and technical reports accurately.
- Support the maintenance, care and calibration of NDT equipment.
- Follow airport security procedures, airside regulations and operational requirements at all times.
- Maintain high levels of professionalism when working around customers, airlines and maintenance personnel.
- Participate in apprenticeship training programmes, assessments and development activities.
- Work towards achieving recognised NDT certifications and qualifications.
- Undertake any other duties required to support aviation inspection operations.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential
- Minimum of 3 GCSEs at Grade 4/C or above, including:
- English
- Maths
- Science
- Strong interest in aviation, aircraft maintenance, engineering or technical inspection.
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Self-motivated with a positive attitude towards learning.
- Practical, organised and methodical approach to work.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Good communication skills.
- Ability to meet mandatory NDT eyesight requirements through aided or unaided vision testing.
- Willingness to work in operational airport and aircraft maintenance environments.
Desirable
- Full UK driving licence or working towards obtaining one.
- Previous experience or studies in aviation, engineering or manufacturing subjects.
- Basic understanding of aircraft systems or aerospace engineering.
