If you enjoy being out on site, solving problems with your hands as well as your head, and seeing a job through from first fix to final handover, we would love to hear from you. UK Turnstiles is growing, and we are looking for an experienced Access Control Engineer to join our friendly engineering team.
You will work with a specialist range of entrance control equipment, turnstiles, speed gates, automatic pedestrian gates and vehicle barriers, alongside the access control systems you already know well. If turnstiles are new to you, that is absolutely fine. With a solid access control background you will pick up the entrance control side quickly, and we provide full product and manufacturer training to help you get there.
About UK Turnstiles
We are a specialist supplier and installer of pedestrian and vehicle entrance control systems, working with customers right across the UK. Our work covers turnstiles, speed gates, automatic pedestrian gates, access control systems and vehicle barriers. As a growing company, we can offer you genuine variety, interesting projects and the chance to become an expert in a niche and in demand field.
The role
This is an office-based role in Horsham. While there may be some flexibility, you must be able to be in the Horsham office up to five days a week when needed, so you'll need to live within a comfortable commuting distance. No two weeks look quite the same, and you will enjoy real ownership of the work you do. Your day to day will include:
- Installing and commissioning access control systems
- Installing turnstiles, speed gates, automatic pedestrian gates and vehicle barriers
- Wiring access control panels, readers, controllers and field devices
- Connecting override controls, fire alarm interfaces, exit devices and safety equipment
- Integrating access control systems with turnstiles, gates and barriers
- Working from wiring diagrams and installation drawings
- Diagnosing electrical, mechanical and system related faults
- Carrying out planned preventative maintenance and reactive service visits
- Testing completed installations and making sure everything runs correctly
- Providing friendly customer training and equipment handover
- Completing job sheets, service reports and project documentation
- Working alongside customers, project managers and other contractors on site
- Visiting our Horsham premises for equipment collection, training and project preparation when needed
Travel and overnight stays
We want to be upfront so you can picture the role clearly. This is a hands on, travelling position, and regular overnight stays are part of the job. You would be travelling to customer sites anywhere in the UK, staying away overnight on a regular basis, sometimes for several consecutive nights on larger projects, and working the occasional early start, extended day or weekend when a project calls for it, with overtime paid at the applicable rate.
We look after you while you are away. The company covers your accommodation and all approved business expenses, so you are never out of pocket for working away from home. If regular UK travel suits your lifestyle, this role offers plenty of it.
What you will bring
We are looking for an experienced access control engineer who takes pride in a job done well. Ideally you will have:
- Proven experience installing, commissioning, servicing and fault finding access control systems
- Confidence working independently on customer sites
- Experience with access control readers, controllers, locking devices and associated field equipment
- A good understanding of relays, inputs, outputs and volt free contacts
- Experience wiring control panels and following electrical schematics
- Strong practical fault finding skills, with a calm and methodical approach to working out whether an issue is electrical, mechanical or system related
- Warm, professional communication and a genuine customer first attitude
- A reliable, safety conscious way of working, happy both on your own and as part of a team
- A full UK driving licence with fewer than six current penalty points, and the ability to meet the requirements of our vehicle insurer
- A willingness to travel nationwide and undertake regular overnight stays
Please declare any current driving endorsements during the recruitment process.
Desirable experience (but not essential)
Any of the following would be a welcome bonus, though we are happy to train the right person:
- Turnstiles, full height turnstiles, speed gates or optical entrance control
- Automatic pedestrian gates, vehicle barriers or gate automation
- Paxton Net2, Suprema or BioStar, Nortech, CDVI, HID or similar access control products
- Intercom and door entry systems, or ANPR systems
- Networked access control systems
- Maglocks, electric strikes and monitored locking devices
- Door contacts, emergency releases and fire alarm interfaces
- Induction loops, photocells and safety beams
- Basic mechanical installation, alignment and adjustment
- CSCS, ECS, IPAF or other relevant industry qualifications
What we offer
We think this is a great place to build a long term career. In return for your skills you will receive:
- A basic salary of £38,000 to £45,000 per year, depending on experience
- Paid overtime
- A company vehicle and fuel card
- Company funded accommodation for overnight work
- Approved subsistence and business expenses covered
- Specialist product and manufacturer training
- All tools, uniform and equipment provided
- A workplace pension and free parking at our Horsham premises
- Ongoing training and real opportunities to progress
- A permanent, secure role within a friendly and growing specialist company
How to apply
We would love to hear from you. Please send us your CV along with a short summary of your access control, electrical and engineering experience. If you have worked with turnstiles, speed gates, automatic gates, vehicle barriers or related entrance control equipment, do mention it, though it is not essential.
Not sure you tick every box? If you have a strong access control background and the right attitude, please still get in touch. We provide full training and would much rather hear from you than have you rule yourself out.
