Job Title: Vehicle Technician

Salary: £26,000 - £34,000 per annum, depending on experience

Contract Type: Permanent, full time, 37 hours per week

Reporting to: Vehicle Workshop Manager

Job Purpose

The British Motor Museum houses over 400 vehicles, dating from the 1890s to the present day. Each vehicle was either produced by, or developed in connection with, Britain’s motor industry – making the Museum the largest collection of historic British cars in the world. Working as part of the Workshop Team, this rare opportunity involves assisting with a rolling programme of vehicle maintenance and conservation which encompasses veteran, vintage, post-war, classic and modern cars.

You will also be preparing and running vehicles for events, shows and exhibitions; working with the Curatorial Team to move vehicles into position around the Museum site and assisting colleagues in other teams to bring the collection to a wider and more diverse audience.

The Museum’s vehicle workshop is unique in that visitors can view the ongoing work from an upstairs gallery. As well as a skilled mechanic, we’re looking for someone who is eager to engage with our visitors and answers any questions they may have.

While the position is primarily based at the British Motor Museum, you may be required to travel to attend shows and events with the collection vehicles. This may involve occasional evening and weekend work – such as the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, amongst others.

Main Duties

Maintain the British Motor Museum vehicle collection to the highest standards
Provide technical support during the use of collection vehicles
Undertake the conservation of vehicles
Maintain a number of site vehicles associated with the running of the Museum (this includes vans, trucks and heavy gardening machinery)
Work with the Curatorial Team to exhibit the cars effectively across both Museum buildings
Attend external exhibitions, shows and events to assist with logistics and to maintain and troubleshoot any issues with supplied vehicles
Assist other teams when programmes require the use of collection vehicles
Engage with Museum audiences, when required, providing information on the collection and its conservation to members of the public

Other Duties

Take responsibility for your own health, safety and welfare, ensuring compliance with Trust’s Health and Safety policies, procedures and safe systems of work
Be responsible for your own behaviour and act in a manner that avoids and discourages any form of discrimination or harassment; to comply with the Trust’s Equal Opportunities Policy
Undertake to familiarise yourself with the data protection procedures set down by the Company as a result of the General Data Protection Regulation
Actively and positively contribute to the success of the business in delivering your duties and any other business-related activities which may reasonably be requested

Knowledge, Skills, Experience and Attributes Required

Apprentice trained motor vehicle mechanic
City and Guilds/ IMI qualified or equivalent
Full UK Driving Licence
Knowledge of safe working practices in a vehicle workshop setting, including manual handling
Physically able to facilitate the movement of vehicles with the assistance of other team members
Ability to work as part of a team and on your own
Good time management
Excellent communication skills
The ability to work under pressure during busy periods
Fabrication and bodywork skills would be advantageous
Knowledge of historic cars is desirable but not essential
