The Role
The post holder carries continuing responsibility for the operational management and decision making for flow and capacity throughout NHS Lanarkshire. The post holder also has authority and responsibility for ensuring that processes are in place for the management of flow and capacity, the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes to improve flow and capacity and improve standards of care.
The post holder will be responsible for the following:
Ensuring all patients who require admission to hospital via an emergency route are assessed and allocated to a bed within a 4-hour period. This role is integral to the clinical teams in Emergency Departments and senior clinical decision-makers and works closely with clinical teams in all specialities including critical care.
Ensuring all patients who require admission to hospital via an elective route are allocated to a bed post procedure in either day surgery or in an in-patient area. This role is integral to the clinical teams and senior clinical decision-makers in the elective specialities including surgery and theatres.
Ensure all patients who are discharged from our wards and departments are completed in a timeous way, supported by the discharge lounges and transport partners. All areas are expected to discharge 40% of expected patient discharges in line with KPIs.
Ensuring all patient transfers to alternatives facilities including facilities in partner health boards, community hospitals and nursing homes are managed in a safe, planned and timeous way.
To provide management support to the Service Manager in the day to day operation capacity and flow.
To manage the patient flow coordinators and call handling services.
To support and advise senior clinical staff and act as a professional resource for all members of the Unit.
As well as a formal interview, the recruitment process will also include an interview exercise.
Please note this is a fixed term post for 12 months. Where a post only has temporary funding and an existing member of NHS Lanarkshire staff wishes to apply, this will be treated as a secondment. The employee MUST already have written agreement from their line manager to be released on a secondment before applying for the post.
In this key role, you will:
Management of health and illness
Responsibility and authority to assess determine and maintain standards of service and patient care, including contributing to audit, service review and standard setting and its implementation and evaluation within the designated department.
Authorise and ensure the development, implementation and monitoring of local policies and protocols.
Authorise and ensure processes are in place to successfully manage flow and capacity throughout.
Support the work of improving flow and capacity and support any national pilot projects where applicable.
Authorise and ensures an appropriate system is in place for health promotion and health education within the department.
As directed by the Service Manager liaises with medical colleagues to maximise the effective running of the flow and capacity.
Staff Management
Lead the Flow Team to deliver expected KPIs and ensure appropriate escalation of all flow matters when on-site covering all specialties across the Site.
Responsibility and authority to ensure that processes, staff and resources are in place that will guarantee the delivery of the pre-determined standard of service and patient focussed care within the Site, through effective leadership and by collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team.
Responsible for supporting the recruitment, interviewing and induction of all new staff within the Flow Team.
Responsible for co-ordinating the annual leave of all staff within their department to ensure adequate cover at all times.
Responsible for the authorisation of all payroll over time and extra hours payments for staff within the Flow Team.
What You'll Bring:
Educated to degree level with a willingness to undertake a Masters degree, if not already in procession of this.
Demonstrable experience at a senior level in health care.
Evidence of advanced improvement methodology training and application
Experience in a management role proven leadership skills and experience are essential
Understand the patient workflow of all services.
Possess keyboard skills with the ability to use Word, Excel, Microsoft office suite.
Good working knowledge of all the IT packages in use throughout the services.
A broad understanding of a wide range of equipment.
Current and wide-range of specialised professional knowledge.
Working knowledge of HR issues.
