Overview
From September 2026, Maesteg School is seeking to appoint a permanent, term time only Safeguarding and Wellbeing lead. Working as part of our pastoral team, the role-holder will be the main point of contact for safeguarding issues for parents, carers, staff and governors. They will ensure that all safeguarding and child protection procedures are consistently adhered to and that all members of the school community are aware of these. They will work with the pastoral team in responding to the wellbeing needs of our pupils and will lead on all matters relating to Looked after children.

Key Functions

Ensure the school systems for monitoring, tracking and following up on safeguarding concerns are rigorously implemented and high quality.
Reinforce the high levels of expectations of vigilance around safeguarding.
Delivering induction and update training to staff and governors.
Develop the school’s relationship with the Local Authority (including the Education Engagement Team, Early Help Team) ensuring that all existing support is utilised in ensuring the safety and improving of the wellbeing of pupils.
Develop relationships with all external pupil support agencies
Identify pupils who would benefit from proactive safeguarding work and deliver a programme of support to those pupils.
To take accountability for safeguarding across the school.
Monitor and challenge the appropriateness of responses from the Local Authority.
To support CLA pupils and families, ensuring that all existing support is utilised to provide the highest standard of care
To support vulnerable pupils, ensuring that all existing support is utilised to provide the highest standard of care.

Principal Responsibilities and Activities

To hold responsibility for dealing with safeguarding issues, providing advice, and responding to concerns.
To ensure the school meets all statutory requirements regarding safeguarding.
To follow up on all safeguarding concerns flagged by members of staff, through the online reporting system (My Concern)
To lead the whole school responsibility for, and commitment to, the safeguarding and promotion of the well-being of all pupils.
To ensure safeguarding tracking systems are utilised, constantly reviewed and improved.
To engage with the school culture, having a high profile within the school and the local community and develop an understanding of the impact of pupil safety on teaching and learning.
To help develop a culture of growth and progression within the pupil support team.
To work closely with the local authority to ensure that referrals are promptly dealt with, re-referring where necessary
To refer cases to PREVENT and other agencies where appropriate (in liaison with the Education Engagement Team).
Organise annual Safeguarding and Prevent training (in addition to the input from the local authority).
To develop an understanding of local level thresholds, assessment procedures and conference structures and to ensure that where the school is engaged with these, that they are carried out in a manner supportive of the child and the school.
To contribute to the update of the school safeguarding policy and to ensure that pupils, parents, governors and staff are aware of and have access to the policy.
To provide safeguarding updates to the Leadership Team
To be flexible and agile in responding to emerging need in the community.
To maintain accurate and confidential child protection files for relevant pupils.
To prioritise concerns based on need.
To facilitate external agencies working with pupils in school.
To understand and promote the link between positive mental health and attendance and engagement in school.
To be available during school hours to respond to safeguarding concerns.
Liaise with parents/carers in relation to safeguarding and wellbeing social and emotional issues as required.
To work with the Education Engagement Team to have oversight and monitor the safeguarding audit.
To attend Child Protection Conferences, Review Conferences and Core Group meetings.
To produce reports for Child Protection Conferences, Review Conferences, Core Group meeting and MARAC.
To attend CLA Review meetings and produce Personal Education Plans (PEPs).
To produce reports when required for outside agencies such as CAHMS and any agencies working with vulnerable pupils.

Pay: £31,922.00-£33,525.00 per year
