We are seeking an experienced and motivated Traffic and Transportation Engineer to join our team and help shape the future of Derby’s transport network. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in shaping the city's future by assessing the impact of new developments, supporting sustainable growth, and helping to maintain a safe and efficient highway network for all users.
As part of a professional and collaborative team, you will provide expert technical advice on highway development control matters, ensuring that new developments deliver safe and suitable access arrangements while supporting the Council's wider transport, sustainability and regeneration objectives.

The Opportunity
In the role of Traffic and Transportation Engineer, here’s an example of what you’ll be doing to make an impact:
Working within the New Streets and Highways Development Control team, you will lead on the assessment of planning applications and development proposals, evaluating their impact on the highway and transport network, and providing clear, evidence-based recommendations.
You will work closely with planning officers, developers, elected members, internal services and external stakeholders to ensure that development-related transport issues are effectively managed and that appropriate highway improvements are secured.

We are looking for a proactive and skilled professional who can confidently manage a varied workload and provide sound advice in a busy development environment.
We welcome applications from individuals who have:
- Experience in highway development control, traffic engineering, transport planning or a similar field.
- An understanding of planning and highway legislation, policies and guidance.
- Experience in assessing development proposals and providing clear technical advice.
- Strong communication skills and the confidence to work with a wide range of stakeholders.
- The ability to manage their own workload while supporting colleagues and junior team members.
- A proactive approach and a genuine interest in improving transport and travel opportunities.
You will need to be able to undertake regular site visits within Derby City’s boundary.
