Ready to take the next step in your neonatal nursing career?

We are looking for an enthusiastic and experienced QIS Neonatal Nurse to join our Level 2 Neonatal Unit as a Band 6 Sister/Charge Nurse.

In this role, you will provide high-quality, family-centred care to premature and sick newborn infants, lead shifts, support and develop junior staff, and contribute to quality improvement, governance, and service development.

Essential requirements:

Registered Nurse with NMC registration
Neonatal QIS qualification
Significant neonatal nursing experience
Excellent leadership, communication, and organisational skills

Main duties of the job

Recording the patient’s response to nursing care planned and implemented

Evaluating the effect of the nursing care planned delivery.

Reporting any untoward incidents and investigating the cause

To provide a safe environment for the neonate to facilitate optimal neonatal outcomes

Assisting the senior staff to enable effective patient care by the other qualified members of the ward team

Regularly taking charge of the unit.

Participate in the orientation programmes for the newly qualified nurses, nursery nurses and health care assistants

Participate in the development of the newly qualified nurses, nursery nurses and health care assistants

Assisting in the overall ward management and the determination of the nursing priorities.

To be able to develop and foster a team working atmosphere.

Participating in the clinical education of student nurses

Using personal teaching and assessing skills and act as clinical supervisor.

Demonstrating to and supervising student nurses nursing techniques.

Identifying teaching/learning opportunities and planning clinical teaching for nursing staff and student nurses.

Identifying relevant research findings to support clinical practice.

Organising and participating planned teaching programmes for the ward in conjunction with the senior staff.

Being an assessor of student/nurses/midwives/ENB 405 students.

Using counselling skills to benefit of staff, parents, relatives/carers.

Participate in clinical governance cycle and Trust risk management procedures.

Ensuring the effective and efficient supply and use of support services and resources

Maintaining and rotating supplies at the agreed stock levels.

Participating in the development and testing of new equipment, materials and procedures for patient care.

Maintaining the safe custody and use of drugs.

Reporting equipment and furnishings which need repair or replacement.

Reporting any risks to health and safety to the Clinical Manager.

Reporting any deficiencies in the support services to the Clinical Manager.

Contacting as appropriate, other nurses, midwives and health care disciplines and providing written reports on request.

Preparing written summaries of nursing care and liaising with the Primary Health Care Team on discharge/transfer home.

To observe the confidentiality of patients information at all times in accordance with the Data Protection Act.

To participate in multidisciplinary audit.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

To contribute and lead with regard to setting and monitoring of nursing standards, procedures and guidelines.

To maintain safe custody and use of drugs according to local policy.

To be aware of all the Trust policies/procedures/local guidelines with special emphasis on fire, major incidents and child protection policies/guidelines

To have working knowledge of the Health & Safety Regulations and implications in the neonatal unit and personal role/responsibilities.

To attend annual mandatory updates training including in service training and professional education sessions

Maintaining an area of personal interest and expertise in a nursing topic relevant to neonatal and family care.

Maintaining cardio pulmonary resuscitation skills both adult and neonatal.

Maintaining skills in intravenous injections techniques and central line care

Participating in ward meetings to agree local practice.

Acting up for the senior staff where appropriate and with support.

DECISIONS & JUDGEMENTS

The post holder is required to escalate clinical decisions to Lead Neonatologist and Ward Manager and escalate managerial decisions to the Ward Manager.

KNOWLEDGE, TRAINING & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED TO DO THE JOB

Essential:

RGN/RN Child / RM
Neonatal Qualified In speciality qualification (ENB 405 or equivalent)
Mentorship in practice (ENB 998 / MIPS)
NLS trained
Child Protection Training
Effective managerial / leadership skills.
Sound working experience of Child protection issues
Sound knowledge and use of current research and developments to influence clinical practice
Basic knowledge of computers & SEND database Participate in divisional risk management and clinical governance framework
Experience at Band 5 within neonatal setting
Experience & ability to participate within emergency situations within neonatal unit and deliveries
Excellent neonatal clinical skills
Excellent verbal and written communication skills Effective teaching, training and Preceptorship skills
Able to develop and motivate a team of staff acting as a role model
Able to work and communicate effectively across professional team and organisational boundaries
Ability to delegate and prioritise, meet tight deadline and work independently
Administration of IV drugs Ability to make best use of available resources e.g. staffing & equipment
Knowledge of Breast feeding initiative.

Desirable:

Experience post Neonatal Qualified In speciality course (ENB 405 or equivalent)
