Full job description

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is one of the largest healthcare systems in the United Kingdom, employing approximately 40,000 staff across a wide range of clinical and non-clinical professions and roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health services to a population of over 1.15 million people, and to a wider population of 2.2 million when regional and national services are included.

The role:

The post is based within Inverclyde Royal Hospital where patients receive chemotherapy and associated treatments for cancer. The area operates Monday Friday. The age range of patient is young to older adults.

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:

This is a Permanent
Working 22.5 hours per week
Shift Pattern - As per rota
Base location - Inverclyde Royal Hospital
Please note salary is pro-rata for part time hours

Key responsibilities:

Clinical

To assess patient needs, plan/implement and evaluate a programme of care which is evidence based utilising all available resources taking into consideration the lifestyle, gender and cultural background and ensure involvement with the patient, family, carers and significant others.
Maintain patient records in line with NMC guidelines for records and record keeping.
Using initiative and existing knowledge and skills to provide safe support and advice for out of hours patient enquiries, referring to medical staff where necessary.
Develop and maintain a high level of accuracy and precision in venous access skills, including cannulation, venepuncture, iv injection and advanced techniques with all types of indwelling intravenous catheters.
Develop knowledge and skills in order to accurately and safely reconstitute intravenous medication in accordance with health and safety.

Professional:

Practice within the legal & Ethical framework as established by Nursing Midwifery Council (NMC) and National Legislation to ensure patient interests and well being are met.
Work within the National Health Service (NHS), NHS Greater Glasgow and Health & Safety Executive (HSE) Legislation, Policy, Guidelines and Procedures.
Empower patients to take responsibility for their health, well-being and future lifestyle by practising in an open transparent and inclusive manner, thereby ensuring patients have the relevant information to participate in decisions about their care.
Provide extensive information, including discussing sensitive issues with patients and relatives in order to ensure adequate health promotion during and after transplant.

Education and Research/Audit:

Contribute to the provision of an appropriate learning environment in line with NES Quality Placement Standards.
Complete clinical appraisal of pre registration nurses.
Participate in performance appraisal in line with policy.
Demonstrate own professional development.
Support the implementation of research and clinical audit where appropriate.

Organisational/Managerial:

Organise own time and that of junior staff and learners.
Ensures effective day-to-day management of other resources including stores supplies pharmacy and maintenance of equipment.
Regularly lead a team of nurses.
In conjunction with the Ward Manager/Deputy ensure that the nursing resource is utilised efficiently and effectively by managing duty roster/ sickness absence and the use of additional hours i.e. bank agency.
Contribute to the recruitment and selection process.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

First/Second Level Registered Nurse with post registration experience
Ability to fulfil criteria outlined in the job description

From 1 April 2026, the Agenda for Change full-time working week will reduce from 37 hours to 36 hours. Part-time working hours will be reduced on a pro-rata basis. A corresponding increase in the hourly rate will apply, ensuring that overall pay remains unchanged.
