Full job description

When there is a fire, flood or severe weather, we’re among the first to respond. You must be located within 45 minutes of Tolvaddon Community Fire station (TR14 0EQ). This is a 24-hour service and volunteers will need to be available when on call. We would like volunteers who; - Be able to volunteer on a regular basis. - Can commit to volunteer a total of 24 hours per month on the on-call rota (2 shifts x 12 hours each or 4 shifts x 6 hours). - Usually, a single shift is 12 hours; daytime 7am to 7pm and night-time 7pm to 7am. - Have held a driving licence for at least 2 years which allows you to drive in the UK. Be confident driving a large British Red Cross vehicle or leased vehicle. - Are able to attend monthly team meetings on Thursday nights (6pm to 8pm). - Are available to undertake required e-learning modules and online training sessions in the first few months of volunteering plus other service specific trainings as required. - Can commit to volunteering for at least 12 months. *Due to the nature of this role, applicants must undergo Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) check. Applicants will be asked to provide ID documents in support of the DBS check.* *Unfortunately we aren't able to accept applications from 15 – 17 year olds for this role. Why we want you: Working alongside the local emergency services every day, from house fires and flooding to power cuts and water shortages, the British Red Cross responds to an emergency almost every 4 hours. As an Emergency Response Volunteer, you will give people the support they need at a time they need it the most.

Tasks: Respond to emergency call outs in your local area.

Give emotional support to people and communities affected by an emergency.

Give practical support such as distributing clothing, food or water after an emergency.

Tell people where they can get extra support.

Collaborate with local government or emergency services staff.

Skills: Warm and friendly.

Calm and can follow processes under pressure.

Good listening skills and ability to empathise.

Can communicate in a calm manner.

Able to act responsibly.
