As part of our continuing expansion of medical, pharmaceutical and healthcare sciences at Bangor University, the North Wales Medical School is seeking a suitably qualified and experienced applicant for this permanent, full-time role of Lecturer in Clinical Skills and Simulation Practice.
We are seeking a suitably qualified and experienced applicant to contribute to the design, delivery, assessment, and evaluation of clinical skills teaching and assessment for the undergraduate and graduate entry medical programme. You will work in close collaboration with, and report to, the Clinical Skills and Simulation Lead Senior Lecturer. Candidates should be educated to degree standard in a relevant clinical area and have previous experience in clinical skills and simulation teaching and possess the required teaching qualification (or be able and willing to obtain within 3 years of appointment)
The ability to communicate through the medium of Welsh is desirable for this role. If applicants are not able to speak / write in Welsh at present, there are many opportunities to learn if the successful candidate wishes to do so.
This role will have an academic base at Bangor main campus, with visits to clinical teaching centres and Wrexham campus as required.
Through our Dynamic Working framework, there will also be the option to spend some time working remotely (although remaining in the UK) to support work life balance, which will be discussed further with candidates at interview.

The North Wales Medical School is the focus for medical, biomedical teaching and research at Bangor University. The school comprises of over 90 staff, delivering a career-spanning portfolio of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes that continues to expand. These include existing programmes in Biomedical and Medical Sciences, Pharmacology, Physician’s Associate and the franchised Cardiff C21 North Wales medicine programme. From Autumn 2024 onwards, the University’s Welsh Government-backed North Wales Medical School commenced its new, independent Medicine programme, subject to GMC quality assurance monitoring, and a new Pharmacy MPharm programme is due to commence in 2025 .
The School’s research centres are organised with partner schools within the Bangor Institute for Medical and Health Research (BIHMR), spanning medicines optimisation, primary care, clinical trials, health economics, ageing and dementia, public health and cancer biology and pharmacology.
The School’s overall mission is to champion and promote excellent interprofessional medical, health and social care, research, scholarship, teaching and learning, quality and values with people who use services, practitioners, and stakeholders; to promote language and cultural competence relevant to local, national and international partners, and to provide an inclusive culture and environment for staff and students within the School.
The programme benefits from state-of-the-art campus facilities for basic science, clinical simulation and skills training. Clinical exposure is gained across an extensive network of General Practices, primary, community and secondary care facilities across North Wales in close collaboration with Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board. Students gain a rich experience across urban, rural, and remote healthcare settings that reflect the spectacular geography of the region.
The new independent North Wales Medical School programme will closely follow the current Cardiff C21 North Wales Medicine programme with Cardiff University School of Medicine acting as the contingency partner required by the GMC. Medical student intake consists of a mix of direct entry students who join Year 1, whilst graduate entrants complete a ‘catchup’ summer school before joining Year 2. During Years 1 and 2, students build a solid foundation of medical science using a case based learning approach, along with clinical skills and simulation training and early patient contact sessions. This prepares students for Year 3, which consists of an innovative longitudinal integrated clerkship based in a General Practice, with students living within and contributing to a local community. Years 4 and 5 comprises clinical rotations in hospital and primary care, in preparation for initial employment as NHS employment as Foundation House Officers.
The post holder will be a clinical expert for the delivery of clinical skill and high-fidelity simulation for medical undergraduates at Bangor University and for the C21 North teach-out students. The post holder will be expected to work closely with the medical education team in the development, implementation and evaluations of clinical skills teaching, simulation training and assessment of programmes within the North Wales Medical School. They will work closely with, and report to, the Clinical Skills and Simulation Lead Senior Lecturer. Inter professional education should be considered and implemented where possible with other schools and programmes across the College and University.
The lecturer will help ensure that the medicine programme delivered at North Wales Medical School offers the highest quality learning experience for students and is internationally competitive.
The lecturer will work with colleagues in the North Wales Medical School and in partnership with primary and secondary care North Wales including educational leads, undergraduate departments and clinicians across the region ensuring requirements of the programme are met and deliver clinical expertise and skills focused mainly but not exclusively in their main speciality.
The post holder will also support the development of academic staff, undergraduate and postgraduate students and to carry out academic management duties with the school as required.
The post is weighted towards providing clinical skills teaching support for medical students, but it is expected that the appointee will also contribute to related undergraduate/postgraduate programmes, including the Physician Associate programme as time permits.
- To assist with the planning and development of clinical skills, virtual reality and clinical simulation suite of the North Wales Medical School.
- Facilitate and deliver a range of clinical skills/simulation training sessions for undergraduate medical students, and other students.
- Work as a simulation/clinical skills tutor to enhance and improve the clinical competency of medical students, ensuring that a high standard of clinical care is maintained.
- To devise, provide, evaluate, and participate in training and education programs to support the development of skills, knowledge and attitude required by medical and other students to ensure the delivery of competent, high quality patient care.
- To support the medical educational leads in the delivery of clinical skills/simulation training and associated assessment processes.
- To help plan, co-ordinate and administer the running of the Clinical Skills/VR/Simulation suite(s) for undergraduate medical students and others in the practical lab.
- The post-holder will also be expected to be fully involved in the development of post-graduate courses in medical education with the University of Bangor and being part of the teaching faculty for the post-graduate medical education programmes.
- To maintain clinical competencies as part of an agreed programme with the Dean of Medicine.
- To deputise for other staff as appropriate.
- Provide and receive complex information as part of clinical scenarios and skills training to ensure understanding where barriers exist i.e. medical students understanding of the application of knowledge to clinical situations.
- To be an active member of a national Clinical Skills Network, keeping up to date with new developments and the sharing of good practice.
- Liaise with other professional colleagues to encourage multi-disciplinary training and education.
- Co-ordinate on a regular basis with other School staff regarding the planning, delivery and feedback of clinical skills education and simulation training to undergraduate medical students.
- Establish and maintain good working relationships with all professional groups within the local Health Board.
- It is expected that the post holder will attend external events and meetings and report back on new ideas and practices.
- Promote further educational opportunities in suite promoting the ethos of multi-disciplinary learning.
- Engage in developing the structure of existing modules and units of study within programs and using evidence-based approaches to enhance the impact of teaching/pedagogical methods and innovations as appropriate.
- To conduct cycles of evaluation and research within the clinical sciences component that assess the quality and impact of all used teaching methods and to identify areas of best practice.

Qualifications/Training:
Essential
- The post holder should hold a relevant clinical degree (e.g. medicine, nursing) and have specialist training in clinical skill and simulation.
- The post holder will have maintained their own clinical professional development.
Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education (PGCertHE) or equivalent OR Recognised by the HEA as a Fellow / Recognised by Advance HE as a Fellow against Descriptor 2 of the UKPSF (or minimum of 3 years substantial teaching experience for conversion to HEA Fellowship within 3 years of appointment) or equivalent qualification or evidence (e.g, Academy of Medical Educators or similarly recognised professional educator body.
