About Volunteer It Yourself (VIY)

VIY combines volunteering and DIY by challenging young people aged 14-24 to learn trade and building skills, on the job, by helping to refurbish and transform youth and community facilities in need of essential improvements (e.g. youth clubs, community centres, sports clubs, and arts, music and cultural venues).

The majority of young people who take part and benefit are disengaged or excluded from mainstream education and training, at risk of disengagement, and/or unemployed.

VIY learners are mentored by professional tradespeople and gain vocational skills accreditations as well as access to further training, work placement and apprenticeship opportunities with local providers and employers beyond the project.

VIY launched in 2011 and, to date, we’ve renovated over 900 youth and community buildings across England and Wales, with over 15,000 young people taking part gaining over 8,000 Entry Level 3 City & Guilds accreditations, mentored by over 1,200 trade skills mentors.

VIY is scaling rapidly, reaching and benefitting even more young people and communities with a growing team sheet of partners, including National Lottery, People’s Postcode Lottery, Barclays, Toolstation, Dulux and multiple local authorities across the country - with a growing team of over 50 to match. To help us continue to expand at scale, we need some internal support to help us work best as a remote team, to become more efficient and make us an even greater place to work.

Job purpose - Internal Team Officer

VIY has grown significantly over the past two years. Reporting to the Communications and Partnerships Manager, you’ll help to manage and improve administrative procedures and processes, supporting the wider team and ensuring operational efficiency.

You’ll help to welcome new team members into the organisation, from interview to onboarding, through to helping oversee the overall appraisal process for all team members with their Line Managers.

You’ll love a to-do list and most importantly, ticking off tasks on that list and getting things done.

There is definitely room in this role to suggest new and improved ways of working and doing things - in fact, we’d love that! A creative approach is welcomed, particularly where budgets are tight and where we are still growing as an organisation.

You’ll also help us come together and work better together as a team, helping to organise bi-annual team events and make sure we’re looking smart on site.

VIY is fast moving - this role will require energy, determination and flexibility. An amazing opportunity to be part of a passionate organisation delivering a positive mission to become a more streamlined, professional organisation that’s easy to work with and for.

The role

Location: UK, Remote/Home-based, with ability to travel.

Key responsibilities:

Lead recruitment, onboarding and DBS processes.
Maintain employee records and people administration.
Coordinate team events, inductions and internal resources.
Support internal communications and staff engagement activities.
Support appraisal and wellbeing processes across the organisation.
Administrative lead across the organisation.

Person specification

Skills, experience and knowledge

Essential

Strong administrative and organisational skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication.
Ability to manage multiple priorities independently.
Experience using Google Workspace and digital systems.
Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain confidentiality.
Passion for social value and collaborative working.
Ability to work independently and manage workload within a remote team.

Desirable

Experience in HR, administration or internal communications.
Experience coordinating projects or events.
Experience using Canva, Salesforce or digital tools.
