The Growth Company’s (GC) Justice Services team have an exciting new opportunity for a Finance Benefit and Debt (FBD) advisor to deliver high performance levels, compliant activity and customer service standards on the FBD service and support the Service Manager to ensure that service and business objectives are achieved.
Through the delivery of a range of interventions for offenders with financial issues, (on both a one-to-one and group basis), support the resolution of these issues via financial capacity building, personal finance management awareness, reflective spending skills, the establishment of debt repayment plans and provision of help to access state benefits or third sector support.
At The Growth Company, we deliver to the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) Finance, Benefits and Debt Service, supporting individuals in prison and on probation to improve their financial wellbeing. We provide tailored support to help people manage money, access benefits, and address debt, enabling greater stability and removing financial barriers to rehabilitation.
This role will be full time working in custody at HMP Leeds.
Key Responsibilities
- Managing participant caseloads and supporting individuals in both community and prison settings to access benefits and meet claim responsibilities.
- Resolving complex debt issues by identifying financial barriers, negotiating with creditors and agreeing sustainable repayment and rent arrears plans.
- Providing budgeting and financial guidance to build confidence in managing personal finances, spending habits and daily budgeting.
- Liaising with key stakeholders to maintain communication with landlords, utilities, banks, credit unions and other agencies.
- Building strong, motivational relationships that support informed decision making and tailored action planning based on individual needs and learning styles.
- Delivering flexible, multichannel support through face to face, digital, video and telephone interventions to maximise accessibility and engagement.
- Monitoring progress and ensuring follow through by tracking actions, responding to correspondence and maintaining accurate, compliant records.
- Collaborating with probation services and working closely with National Probation Service officers to contribute to targets and service improvements.
About You
- Demonstrate experience supporting vulnerable or marginalised groups including ex offenders, people in custody or those facing multiple barriers.
- Communicate confidently and engage effectively with the ability to motivate, challenge and build trust across diverse backgrounds.
- Remain resilient and calm under pressure within fast paced, target driven environments with competing priorities.
- Show flexibility to travel, work across different settings and occasionally support outside standard hours.
- Manage workload independently while meeting KPIs and maintaining high service standards.
- Act with professionalism, integrity and confidentiality while respecting data security requirements.
- Stay highly organised with the ability to prioritise tasks, maintain accurate records and manage time efficiently.
- Reflect GC values through commitment to positive impact, empowerment and doing the right thing.
Skills Required
- Demonstrate case management expertise gained within training, advice, guidance, counselling or similar environments.
- Evidence strong understanding of debt and benefits including causes of financial mismanagement and DWP or Jobcentre Plus requirements.
- Use IT systems confidently including MI systems, spreadsheets, digital tools, diaries and email to manage caseloads.
- Apply negotiation and problem solving skills to resolve issues, challenge appropriately and advocate for participants.
- Deliver presentations and build networks while promoting services to varied audiences.
- Understand local labour markets alongside training, education and employment pathways that support progression.
- Recognise welfare to work principles including customer needs, national standards and sector expectations.
- Work effectively with multiple stakeholders across probation, community partners and third sector organisations.
