Job Overview

The Deputy Manager plays a key leadership role in supporting the Home Manager with the day-to-day management of the home, ensuring the delivery of outstanding, person-centred care whilst maintaining compliance with CQC regulations, legislation and organisational policies.

The postholder will provide visible leadership to the care team, promote a positive culture, and ensure residents receive safe, effective and compassionate care.

In the absence of the Home Manager, the Deputy Manager will assume responsibility for the operational management of the home, ensuring continuity of care, staff leadership and regulatory compliance.

The Deputy Manager will work closely with the Director of Operations and Compliance, Home Manager and wider management team to continually improve quality, standards and resident outcomes.

The Deputy Manager will report directly to the Home Manager and Director of Operations and Compliance.

Roles and Responsibilities

Leadership and Operational Management

Support the Home Manager in the day-to-day operational management of the home.
Assume responsibility for the running of the home during the Home Manager's absence.
Provide strong, visible leadership to all staff, promoting professionalism, accountability and person-centred care.
Lead by example, demonstrating the values and standards expected throughout the organisation.
Allocate workloads appropriately and ensure sufficient staffing levels throughout each shift.
Participate in the on-call rota as required.

Resident Care

Ensure all residents receive safe, compassionate and person-centred care in accordance with their assessed needs and care plans.
Monitor residents' wellbeing and respond appropriately to changes in physical or mental health.
Liaise effectively with GPs, District Nurses, Social Workers and other healthcare professionals.
Ensure medication is administered safely and in accordance with legislation, company policy and best practice.
Support the Home Manager in maintaining high standards of care planning, documentation and clinical governance.
Promote dignity, independence, choice and respect for every resident.

People Management

Supervise, mentor and support care staff to achieve consistently high standards of practice.
Assist with recruitment, interviews, induction and probation reviews.
Conduct supervisions, competency assessments and annual appraisals.
Support staff development through coaching, training and ongoing feedback.
Manage sickness absence, performance concerns and employee wellbeing in accordance with company policies.
Promote equality, diversity, inclusion and a positive workplace culture.
Ensure all staff understand safeguarding responsibilities, whistleblowing procedures and professional expectations.

Quality Assurance and Compliance

Support the Home Manager and Director of Operations and Compliance in maintaining full compliance with CQC regulations and fundamental standards.
Complete audits relating to care planning, medication, health and safety, infection prevention and control, accidents and incidents, and other compliance areas.
Monitor action plans and ensure improvements are implemented effectively.
Ensure accurate, timely and legally compliant documentation is maintained throughout the home.
Investigate incidents, accidents and complaints appropriately, escalating where necessary.
Promote continuous quality improvement across all areas of the service.

Communication

Maintain effective communication with residents, relatives, staff and external professionals.
Deliver effective handovers and daily team meetings.
Respond professionally to concerns and complaints, ensuring residents and families feel listened to and supported.
Support occupancy by welcoming prospective residents and their families, conducting show rounds and assisting with admissions where appropriate.

Health & Safety

Promote a safe working environment and ensure compliance with Health and Safety legislation.
Ensure infection prevention and control procedures are followed at all times.
Support fire safety, emergency preparedness and environmental safety within the home.
Report hazards, equipment faults and maintenance concerns promptly.
Act appropriately during emergencies and ensure business continuity procedures are followed.

Professional Standards

Maintain confidentiality and comply with UK GDPR and Data Protection legislation.
Work in accordance with safeguarding legislation and report concerns without delay.
Maintain professional registration where applicable.
Attend mandatory training and continue professional development.
Undertake any additional reasonable duties requested by the Home Manager or Director of Operations and Compliance.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care (minimum).
Working towards, or willing to undertake, Level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care.
Previous experience in a senior role within a residential or nursing care setting.
Experience supervising and supporting care staff.
Good working knowledge of CQC regulations, safeguarding and medication management.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Desirable

Level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care.
Previous experience as a Deputy Manager or Team Leader.
Experience managing audits, compliance and quality assurance.
Experience with electronic care planning systems (such as PASS).
Experience supporting CQC inspections and regulatory compliance.
Full UK Driving Licence.
