Job Summary

An opportunity has arisen for Band 5 Staff Nurses on Ward L23, part of the Head & Neck CSU at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. We are looking for forward-thinking and innovative individuals, with knowledge of, and experience in surgical nursing care and a passion for Head & Neck nursing, who are ready to move the ward and the CSU into the future.

L23 is a 22-bed inpatient ward caring for ENT, Maxillofacial and a small number of spinal and stroke patients. As the only Head & Neck inpatient ward, we play a significant role in delivering the CSU’s surgical caseload. Your role will involve supporting the Ward Manager in working with the CSU’s other services to deliver a seamless inpatient service which achieves our wider goals. Knowledge of the CSU’s priorities, Head and Neck experience and a level head are essential attributes of this role.

Why you should join our Team

Ward L23 is Head and Neck's only inpatient ward, catering for both acute and elective Head & Neck admissions from a vast swathe of Yorkshire. The majority of our patients are surgical, from short stay procedures to major cancer resections and reconstruction work.

The staff on L23 are highly experienced in management of complex altered airways such as tracheostomies and laryngectomies, all forms of enteral tube feeding (nasogastric, gastrostomy and jejunostomy tubes), complex wound care and reconstruction flaps. In addition to this core group of patients, the ward also sees spinal and stroke patients, further widening staff’s skills, knowledge and experience.

What you will bring to the role

To provide and be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of individualised programmes of care.
To deliver care without supervision.
To take charge of the ward or department as necessary in the absence of the Sister or Charge Nurse.
To participate in the in-service training, preceptorship and mentorship of junior staff, post basic learners and students.
To take responsibility as the prime care provider for a group of patients.
To promote confidence in our commitment to provide excellent compassionate patient care.
To maintain personal development.
