Full job description

Reporting to: Team Leader - Community Advice Projects

Salary: £23,960 - £25,021 (pro rata) (depending on experience)

Hours: 29 per week - some out of office hours required

Term: To June 2030 (funded for 5 years through the National Lottery)

Location: Outreach and company locations across Wigan Borough

We want people who are passionate about giving an effective service to those most in need. You will need to demonstrate that you can engage skilfully with people from all backgrounds, including clients who are vulnerable and distressed.

You will be a highly motivated strong team player with excellent interpersonal, organisational and time management skills, and the ability to work in a busy office environment.

You will have the ability to understand written and oral information of some complexity, have good numeracy skills, and have effective oral and written communication skills in order to liaise with clients, volunteers and external parties.

This role requires the ability to work flexibly to meet the needs of the organisation and its clients. You may need to work later evenings and occasional Saturdays, although we endeavour to keep these to a minimum.

We cover all areas of the Borough and have public facing offices in both Wigan and Leigh town centres, in addition to a number of outreaches. Our workforce is diverse and made up of both paid staff and volunteers. We are a flexible employer who cares about its people. Our team is really friendly and supportive and hold regular nights out.

Our staff have the opportunity to work hybridly (role allowing), after successful completion of a probationary period. All new staff receive a comprehensive induction and are assigned a staff ‘buddy’ to help them through their first few weeks.

Role Description:

The postholder will provide information, advice and practical support on all social welfare law matters, maintaining clear and accurate records of client interactions. They will provide support and guidance to our outreach volunteers and will attend community events and one-off advice and information sessions, some of which may be outside normal office hours, including Saturdays on occasion.

A DBS check will be required for this role. Having a criminal record will not necessarily bar you from working with us. We will consider job applicants on their individual merits.

You will need to be able to travel across the borough in very short time frames, therefore a driving licence and access to a vehicle are essential for this role.

Main Duties

Provide information and advice across the range of social welfare law matters, to people visiting outreach locations, undertaking follow up in-person or telephone appointments as needed
Use sensitive listening and questioning skills in order to understand the clients needs and capabilities, adapting your approach as needed and empowering them to take an active role in resolving their issue
Research and explore options and implications, relaying these to the client in an appropriate way so that they can make informed decisions
Complete benefits checks when appropriate and support clients to claim benefits, completing forms as required
Act for the client where necessary using appropriate communication skills and channels
Make referrals or signpost as appropriate, in order to progress the client
Ensure that all work meets quality standards and funder requirements
Ensure that work reflects and supports the Citizens Advice service's equality and diversity strategy
Undertake case and outcome recording as required under CAWB, Advice Quality Standard, funder and Citizens Advice requirements
Assist with the collection of client feedback and outcomes monitoring
Contribute to project monitoring and development activities
Support the development of our outreach volunteers
Identify research & campaigns issues and submit evidence forms as required
