Kembla Limited is looking for an experienced Electrical Design Engineer to join our growing team and help strengthen our in-house design capability.
This is a key role for the business. We currently outsource a significant amount of our electrical design work, but as Kembla continues to grow, we want to bring more of this expertise in-house. The successful candidate will help us produce accurate, compliant and commercially practical solar PV and battery storage designs more quickly, supporting our sales, pricing, project management and installation teams.
This role would suit someone with a strong electrical design background who wants to be part of a growing renewable energy business. Direct solar PV and battery storage design experience would be highly advantageous, but we are also open to candidates with solid electrical design experience who are keen to develop in the renewable energy sector.
About the role:
As Electrical Design Engineer, you will be responsible for producing electrical designs and technical documentation for solar PV and battery storage projects across domestic, commercial and industrial installations .You will work closely with our Head of Delivery, sales team, project managers and installation teams to ensure designs are accurate, compliant, practical and delivered quickly enough to support customer quotes and project delivery.This is a hands-on role where your work will directly support the business in improving quote turnaround times, reducing reliance on external design providers and delivering a better service to our customers.
Key responsibilities:
- Produce electrical designs for solar PV and battery storage installations.
- Prepare electrical drawings, schematics, layouts, single line diagrams, string designs, cable calculations and supporting technical documentation.
- Review survey information, site photographs, roof layouts, electrical supply information and customer requirements.
- Support the sales and pricing teams with timely design information for customer quotes and proposals.
- Ensure proposed designs are compliant, commercially practical and suitable for installation.
- Work with project managers, coordinators and installation teams to support smooth project delivery.
- Provide technical clarification and support during live projects.
- Amend designs where site conditions, customer requirements or technical constraints change.
- Support commissioning, troubleshooting and post-installation queries where required.
- Help develop standardised design templates, processes and technical documentation.
- Stay up to date with renewable energy technologies, regulations and best practice.
Essential skills and experience :
- Relevant electrical qualifications, for example NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds, or equivalent.
- 18th Edition Wiring Regulations, BS 7671 certification.
- Proven experience in electrical design.
- Strong understanding of electrical systems and safety standards.
- Ability to read and produce technical drawings and schematics.
- Good problem-solving skills and strong attention to detail.
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple design requests.
- Ability to work independently and take initiative.
- Good communication skills, with the ability to explain technical information clearly.
- Commercial awareness and an understanding of how design decisions can affect cost, margin and delivery.
- Full UK driving licence preferred.
Desirable skills and experience :
- Experience with solar PV and/or battery storage system design.
- Familiarity with design software such as AutoCAD, PVsyst, PV*SOL, SolarEdge Designer or similar.
- Knowledge of grid connection requirements and renewable energy regulations.
- Experience producing single line diagrams, cable calculations, panel layouts, string designs and technical design packs.
- Knowledge of MCS standards and renewable installation requirements.
- Understanding of DNO processes, including G98 and G99 applications.
- Practical understanding of installation, commissioning and maintenance considerations.
- Experience working in electrical contracting, construction, renewables or a fast-paced project environment.
