Role overview

The Sustainability Manager leads the firm’s environmental strategy to ensure we meet our regulatory obligations, reduce our environmental impact, and strengthen or reputation as a responsible business legal services provider. This role blends strategic planning, supported by our Responsible Business Executive with operational execution, stakeholder engagement and compliance oversight. The role has a focus on carbon emissions management, climate risk, and regulatory reporting.
Working closely with senior stakeholders, central services teams, and external partners, the role drives the implementation of key sustainability initiatives, including emissions tracking, the Carbon Reduction Plan, and climate-related disclosures. The role also supports internal capability-building and contributes to client-facing activity.
Introduction to the team:
The successful candidate will report to the Director of Risk & Compliance and work with various central services functions, senior level executives, third party suppliers and vendors.
Key responsibilities:

Carbon Management - Lead the delivery of the firm’s carbon emissions tracking and reporting, including Scope 1, 2 and 3 data collection, methodology development, and annual disclosures, including maintenance of SBTi targets/

Manage and develop the firm’s Carbon Reduction Plan, supporting implementation of emissions reduction initiatives

Support the development and ongoing delivery of the firm’s Climate Transition Plan, aligning with relevant frameworks
-
Regulatory Compliance - Coordinate external sustainability disclosures and ratings, including CDP, EcoVadis, SECR and ESOS
-
Integrate climate-related risks into firm-level risk management, including updating and maintaining the sustainability risk register

ESG Strategy – Assist to design and implement the firm wide sustainability strategy aligned with legal-sector best practice, client expectations and regulatory requirements.

Work cross-functionally with Finance, Operations, Procurement and Business Development teams to improve data quality and embed sustainability into decision-making
-
Support supplier engagement and Scope 3 emissions analysis, including improving data coverage and methodologies
-
Develop and deliver internal sustainability training and awareness initiatives. Including creative ideas to maximise internal engagement.

Contribute to client-facing sustainability activity, including inputs to bids, credentials and thought leadership

Provide regular reporting and updates to senior leadership and governance groups (including the Responsible Business Executive)
Daily and Monthly Responsibilities:

Manage ongoing data collection, validation, and analysis for carbon emissions reporting
-
Maintain and improve reporting models and methodologies (primarily Excel-based)
-
Coordinate inputs across internal stakeholders and external partners
-
Prepare reports, dashboards and executive updates on sustainability performance
-
Track progress against key targets (e.g. emissions reduction goals)

Identify opportunities to improve data quality, reporting processes and efficiency
-
Support delivery of sustainability-related projects across the firm
What are we looking for:

Sustainability Expertise - Experience in sustainability, ESG or climate-related roles, including emissions data and reporting
-
Experience leading or supporting delivery of carbon reduction or sustainability initiatives

Strong analytical skills, with experience working with large and complex datasets
-
Advanced Excel capability (or equivalent) for data analysis and modelling
-
Understanding of relevant frameworks and standards (e.g. TCFD, SBTi, CDP or similar)
-
Experience working with multiple stakeholders across a business, including senior stakeholders
-
Strong communication skills, with the ability to translate technical concepts into clear insights and with the ability to influence internal stakeholders

Legal Sector Awareness – experience in professional services or a regulated industry is highly advantageous
-
Commerciality and Change Management – an understanding of delivering a strategy that makes commercial sense, always considering the needs of the firm, is a must together with the ability to influence and embed behaviours and processes across an organisation
