What are we looking for
Working within our stack design and verification team, reporting to the Head of Stack Development we have an opportunity for a hands-on R&D Test Capability Engineer to lead the design, build, commissioning, and operation of advanced test systems for next-generation PEM electrolyser stacks and full-scale clamping skid frames. This role combines mechanical design, test engineering, instrumentation, systems integration, and prototype development.
Responsibilities
Technical Duties

Design and develop full-scale test capability systems for PEM electrolyser stacks and clamping skid assemblies
- Specify and integrate instrumentation including pressure, temperature, flow, voltage, current, leak detection, and strain/load monitoring systems
- Support commissioning and operation of high-pressure systems in laboratory and pilot environments
- Create detailed engineering drawings, P&IDs, assembly procedures, risk assessments, and technical documentation
- Collaborate closely with stack design, controls, manufacturing, and safety teams to deliver integrated test solutions
- Conduct root cause analysis and troubleshooting during prototype build and test campaigns
- Drive continuous improvement of test capability, reliability, automation, and data acquisition systems
- Support supplier engagement, component selection, fabrication oversight, and workshop activities
- Ensure compliance with relevant safety standards and engineering best practices for hydrogen systems and pressure equipment
Development & Continuous Improvement
- Contribute to continuous improvement of products, processes, and R&D methodologies
- Stay up to date with emerging technologies, materials, and industry developments
- Support knowledge sharing and lessons learned across projects
- Identify opportunities for innovation and efficiency improvements
Health, Safety & Environment (HSE)
- Comply with all health, safety, and environmental policies and procedures
- Ensure safe working practices in offices, workshops, and testing environments
- Identify and report hazards, risks, and incidents
- Support risk assessments and implementation of appropriate controls
- Promote a positive safety culture within R&D activities
Quality & Compliance
- Ensure work meets required quality standards, specifications, and regulations
- Follow defined processes for design control, testing, and documentation
- Support validation and verification activities
- Maintain accurate and traceable technical records
- Contribute to continuous improvement of quality systems and processes
About You
Knowledge and Experience
-
Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Systems Engineering or related discipline
Required
- Experience designing and operating R&D test systems, prototype equipment, or industrial process skids.
- Strong understanding of mechanical structures, clamping systems, piping assemblies, and pressure containment
- Experience with CAD tools such as SolidWorks, Inventor, Creo, or similar
- Familiarity with instrumentation, DAQ systems, sensors, and automated test environments
- Hands-on experience assembling and commissioning prototype hardware
- Knowledge of PEM electrolyser, fuel cell, hydrogen, or electrochemical systems is highly desirable
- Understanding of pressure systems, fluid handling, thermal management, and industrial safety practices
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary R&D teams
Desirable

Knowledge of hydrogen regulations, CE/UKCA compliance, PED/ASME standards, or hazardous area design
- Familiarity with PLC systems, or industrial automation platforms
- Welding, fabrication, or workshop experience for prototype development
