About IIPP

IIPP is a department which sits within The Bartlett, UCL’s global Faculty of the Built Environment. The Bartlett ranks number one in the world for architecture and the built environment. Individually, The Bartlett’s departments lead their fields. In partnership, they develop new responses to pressing world issues. As a whole, they represent a world-leading, multidisciplinary faculty, united by the radical spirit of UCL. The Bartlett is unrivalled in its breadth and depth of disciplines, programmes and departments. It is made up 13 Schools, Institutes, Centres and Units, providing teaching and research in a wide range of subject areas to over 4,000 students each year from across the world.

Professor Mazzucato's Office sits within the Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose (IIPP) at University College London (UCL), bringing together cutting-edge academic theory with teaching and policy practice, to rethink the role of the state in tackling some of the biggest challenges facing society.

IIPP (led by Professor Mazzucato) works with partners to develop a framework which challenges traditional economic thinking, with the goal of creating, nurturing and evaluating public value to achieve growth that is more innovation-led, inclusive and sustainable. This requires rethinking the underlying economics that have informed the education of global public servants and the design of government policies.

IIPP’s work feeds into innovation and industrial policy, financial reform, institutional change and sustainable development. A key pillar of IIPP’s research is its understanding of markets as outcomes of the interactions between different actors. In this context, public policy should not be seen as simply fixing market failures, but also as actively shaping and co-creating markets. Re-focusing and designing public organisations around mission-led, public purpose aims will help tackle the grand challenges facing the 21st century.

About the role

The Office of Professor Mariana Mazzucato is seeking a Project Officer to support the efficient functioning of the office and maintain high-quality delivery of research and policy projects that contribute to global debates on green industrial strategy, new economic thinking, and state capacity.

The Project Officer will provide essential administrative and logistical support across multiple workstreams, helping to coordinate meetings and events, maintain project documentation and databases, and support internal processes that keep projects running smoothly. The postholder will also assist with basic financial coordination and budget monitoring in collaboration with project leads and IIPP’s central teams.

The role requires excellent organisation skills, attention to detail, and a positive, proactive approach to problem-solving within a fast-paced environment. A strong interest in and enthusiasm for Professor Mazzucato’s work is essential, as the postholder will be supporting a dynamic team committed to delivering ambitious research and policy impact.

Duties and responsibilities

Project & Programme Support

Provide day-to-day administrative support to the Programme Manager and Project Coordinators.

Help prepare project materials and simple briefings.

Collate pending requests and invitations for the Director, maintaining attention to detail and prirotising and escalating urgent requests.

Support the Programme Manager to implement efficient project management systems across multi-functional teams.

Ownership of Pending Items & Action Tracking

Track, follow up, and close pending actions across associated project portfolios.

Maintain up-to-date trackers, timelines, and milestone logs, flagging delays or issues to Programme Manager and project leads.

Filing, Documentation & Minutes Management

Maintain clear, accessible filing systems and shared folders for all project documentation.

Prepare and organise agendas, meeting notes, action logs, background briefings, and simple summaries.

Produce accurate minutes and ensure documentation is version-controlled and stored correctly.

Team Support & Continuous Improvement

Help improve team processes, templates, and systems.

Provide flexible support during peak periods, modelling a positive and collaborative working style.

Undertake any other duties appropriate to Grade 7 to ensure high-quality project delivery.

Workshop, Events & Diary Coordination

Support with logistics for workshops, seminars, and meetings, including scheduling / diarising, room bookings, materials preparation, and on-the-day support.

Manage invitations and attendee lists, and liaise with the Media & Events team where required.

Support international meeting coordination (travel, itineraries, briefings).

Backstop the Executive Assistant when required, coordinating travel logistics, and overseeing the Director’s diary.

Support quality assurance of the Director’s schedule and upcoming logistical requirements.

General • Promote and embody the UCL Ways of Working, including Dignity at Work and Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) principles.

Actively support and advance UCL’s equalities and diversity policies within the role.

Comply with and maintain awareness of fire, health, safety, and environmental regulations, supporting UCL’s Sustainability Strategy and net zero ambitions.

Adapt positively to continuous change within the Faculty environment and contribute proactively to team success.

Undertake any other duties appropriate to the role’s grade and remit, as requested by the line manager, within the spirit and purpose of the job.

UCL offers hybrid working arrangements, with the option to work remotely up to 60% of the time where appropriate.
