Job Summary
The Ophthalmic Technician is responsible for supporting the delivery of safe, appropriate, and high-quality patient-centred care across ophthalmology, dermatology, and aesthetic services, including both surgical and non-surgical treatments.
In this role, you will play a vital part in ensuring an exceptional patient experience throughout the clinical journey. You will support ophthalmologists and dermatologists by assisting with patient examinations, diagnostic testing, and clinical procedures, while helping to maintain an efficient and seamless workflow within the clinic.
Your expertise and attention to detail will contribute to the smooth day-to-day operation of the service, ensuring clinics are fully prepared before sessions, efficiently managed during appointments, and appropriately reset afterwards. While the majority of the role will focus on ophthalmic services, there will also be opportunities to support dermatology and aesthetic clinics as required.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Prepare patients for examinations by obtaining their medical history and explaining diagnostic tests and procedures
- Conduct preliminary eye tests, including visual acuity, tonometry, and auto-refraction
- Carry out diagnostic imaging and other tests as directed by the consultant, including Scanning Laser Ophthalmoscopy (SLO), Ocular Coherence Tomography (OCT), Visual Field analysis, biometry, corneal pachymetry and surface analysis, keratometry, indocyanine green angiography and fundus fluorescein angiography, and more
- Assist nursing staff with administrative duties, including managing clinical supplies, ordering and stock management
- Maintain accurate patient records and ensure all documentation is completed efficiently and accurately
- Record accurate daily billing information (codes for tests and procedures)
- Clean and maintain ophthalmic diagnostic and treatment equipment to ensure optimal functionality
- Provide education to patients regarding their health and treatment options
- Support consultants during surgical procedures and outpatient services
- Manage appointment scheduling and follow-up communications with patients
- Provide patients with clear post-operative care instructions using approved guidance and prepared information sheets
- Support and improve patient flow within the clinic
Qualifications and Experience
Essential
- Previous experience as an Ophthalmic Technician
- Perform a range of diagnostic tests as outlined above
- Previous experience in a hospital or clinical environment
- Strong understanding of ocular anatomy and common conditions
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain complex information clearly to patients
- Proficient in using electronic medical records (EMR) systems
- Strong attention to detail and organisational skills to manage multiple tasks effectively
- Ability to work well within a team environment while also being self motivated
- A compassionate approach towards patient care, ensuring comfort and understanding throughout their visit
Desirable
- A background in healthcare, community services, or health sciences
- Strong understanding of skin anatomy and common conditions

Working Hours
Working pattern: 5 days per week between Monday to Friday, totalling 37.5 hours per week
Typical shift times:
· 8:30-16:30
· 9:00-17:00
· 10:00-18:00
This is a fully clinic-based role, with all working hours based onsite at our Harley Street clinic.
