The University of Manchester is seeking an exceptional independent professional to chair formal Grievance, Disciplinary and Appeal Panels.

This is a unique opportunity to contribute to one of the UK's leading universities, supporting a high-performing, values-led institution through the fair, independent and effective oversight of some of its most significant people-related processes.

As Independent Chair, you will provide impartial leadership of panels considering matters including potential dismissal, disciplinary appeals and grievance appeals. You will ensure hearings are conducted fairly, respectfully and proportionately, while maintaining confidence in the University's governance and decision-making processes.

Working alongside senior colleagues and panel members, you will bring sound judgement, independence and credibility to complex and sensitive cases. You will also help identify themes and learning that support continuous improvement across the institution.

About You

We are seeking an individual with substantial experience in governance, employee relations, employment law, disciplinary and grievance processes, or related fields.

You will bring:

Experience chairing or leading complex hearings, investigations, appeals or governance processes.
Strong knowledge of employment law, ACAS Codes of Practice and the principles of natural justice.
The ability to exercise independent judgement in sensitive and often high profile matters.
Excellent listening, facilitation and decision making skills.
Outstanding written communication skills, with the ability to produce clear, evidence based findings and recommendations.
A commitment to fairness, accountability and continuous improvement.
The credibility and confidence to work effectively with senior leaders, trade unions and employees across a large and complex organisation.

Previous experience within higher education is welcome but not essential.

About the Role

The Independent Chair will:

Chair formal disciplinary, grievance and appeal hearings.
Lead panel deliberations and support robust, evidence-based decision making.
Ensure processes are conducted fairly, transparently and consistently.
Produce clear, well-reasoned written outcomes and recommendations.
Identify systemic themes and contribute to institutional learning.
Uphold the highest standards of integrity, objectivity and independence.
