Full job description

Purpose of the Role:

To provide overnight support, safety, and supervision to residents living in a homeless hostel. The Night Support Worker is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment, responding to resident needs, carrying out welfare checks, and supporting individuals to maintain their accommodation while promoting independence and wellbeing.

Responsibilities:

Ensure that the reception is always manned, except on those occasions when left to carry out assigned tasks secure reception when leaving to conduct tasks.
Ensure Central Court Reception / Housing Office is secure when leaving
Answer telephone, put calls through to residents (in Hostel public address system should not be used after midnight), handle any enquiries.
Conduct regular welfare and security checks of the building and residents.
Provide emotional support and practical assistance to residents experiencing homelessness and other complex needs.
Monitor and record residents' wellbeing, behaviour, and any incidents during shifts.
Respond appropriately to emergencies, including fire alarms, accidents, safeguarding concerns, and anti-social behaviour.
Ensure all incidents, concerns, and handovers are accurately documented.
Liaise with emergency services, healthcare professionals, and on-call managers when required.
Manage building access, ensuring only authorised individuals enter the premises.
Carry out basic administrative duties, including updating records, completing reports, and maintaining confidentiality.
Promote equality, diversity, and inclusion while treating all residents with dignity and respect.
Maintain professional boundaries and comply with organisational policies and procedures.

In addition to the duties and responsibilities listed, the job holder is required to perform other duties assigned by the Line Manager / the Duty Person (i.e. Housing Support Officer) from time to time.

Essential Criteria:

Experience working with vulnerable adults, homeless individuals, or people with complex support needs.
Good communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to remain calm and professional in challenging situations.
Strong observation and problem-solving skills.
Knowledge of safeguarding principles and health and safety procedures.
Ability to work independently during overnight shifts.
Basic IT and record-keeping skills.

Desirable:

Experience in homelessness, supported housing, hostel, or residential care settings.
Knowledge of mental health, substance misuse, and housing-related support.
First Aid, Mental Health First Aid, or Safeguarding training.
Understanding of trauma-informed approaches and risk management.
