Registered Manager – Drug & Alcohol Service

Reports To

Director/ Nominated Individual

Location

Failsworth, Manchester

Salary

£40,000–£46,000 per annum, depending on experience.

Hours

Full-time, 40 hours per week
Working hours: Monday to Friday, 09:00–17:00 (with participation in the on-call rota where required).

Job Purpose

The Registered Manager is responsible for the overall leadership, management, quality, and regulatory compliance of a specialist drug and alcohol service providing inpatient detoxification, rehabilitation, and care for individuals with co-occurring mental health conditions, including psychosis. The post holder will ensure the service delivers safe, effective, person-centred care that promotes recovery, independence, and positive outcomes.

Key ResponsibilitiesLeadership and Management

Provide visible and effective leadership to the multidisciplinary team.
Recruit, supervise, develop, and retain competent staff.
Conduct regular supervision, appraisals, and performance management.
Foster a positive, inclusive, and recovery-focused culture.
Manage staffing levels and rotas to ensure safe service delivery.

Clinical Governance

Ensure high standards of clinical care are maintained.
Oversee the safe delivery of inpatient detoxification programmes.
Monitor risk management processes for clients experiencing substance misuse and mental health crises, including psychosis.
Ensure robust safeguarding procedures are implemented.
Review incidents, complaints, and serious events, implementing lessons learned.

Regulatory Compliance

Maintain compliance with all relevant legislation and regulatory standards.
Prepare for and lead regulatory inspections.
Ensure policies and procedures are regularly reviewed and implemented.
Maintain accurate records and governance systems.

Quality Assurance

Monitor service performance through audits and quality improvement initiatives.
Analyse key performance indicators (KPIs).
Develop and implement service improvement plans.
Promote evidence-based practice throughout the service.

Financial Management

Manage the service budget effectively.
Monitor expenditure and staffing costs.
Ensure resources are used efficiently while maintaining high-quality care.

Partnership Working

Develop effective relationships with:
NHS services
Community Mental Health Teams (CMHTs)
Drug and alcohol treatment services
Local authorities and social services
Housing providers
Criminal justice agencies
Commissioners
Represent the organisation at external meetings and professional forums.

Service User Care

Promote person-centred, trauma-informed, and recovery-focused care.
Ensure care plans are comprehensive, regularly reviewed, and outcome-focused.
Support integrated care for individuals with co-occurring substance misuse and mental health conditions.
Encourage service user involvement in care planning and service development.

Risk Management

Oversee comprehensive risk assessments relating to:
Substance withdrawal
Self-harm and suicide risk
Psychosis and mental health deterioration
Aggression and violence
Safeguarding
Medication management
Ensure emergency procedures are implemented and regularly reviewed.

Medication Management

Ensure safe and effective medicines management.
Monitor compliance with controlled drugs legislation.
Work collaboratively with prescribers, pharmacists, and nursing staff.

Person SpecificationEssential Qualifications

Relevant professional qualification in health or social care (e.g. Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN), Registered General Nurse (RGN), Social Worker, Occupational Therapist or equivalent).
Level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care (or willingness to work towards if required).
Management qualification or equivalent leadership experience.

Essential Experience

Significant management experience within drug and alcohol services.
Experience managing inpatient or residential services.
Experience supporting individuals with severe mental illness, including psychosis.
Experience leading services through regulatory inspections.
Budget and resource management experience.
Staff leadership, supervision, and performance management.

Knowledge

Drug and alcohol treatment pathways.
Dual diagnosis and complex mental health presentations.
Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act.
Safeguarding legislation and best practice.
Clinical governance and quality assurance.
Risk assessment and risk management.
Recovery-oriented and trauma-informed practice.
