Full job description

Job Summary - Term time only

We are looking to recruit a dedicated team of Learning mentors for our Alternative provision. The learning mentor will provide targeted learning, behavioural, emotional and pastoral support to pupils attending our alternative provision, helping them overcome barriers to learning, improve engagement, develop positive relationships, and achieve successful learning and personal outcomes.

The Learning Mentor will work closely with teaching staff, families, external agencies and the wider pastoral team to support students who may have experienced social, emotional, behavioural, attendance or other challenges that have impacted their education.

Key Responsibilities

Student Support and Mentoring
Build positive, trusting and professional relationships with pupils.
Act as a key adult for identified students, providing regular learning and mentoring sessions.
Support pupils in developing confidence, resilience, self-esteem and emotional regulation skills.
Assist students in setting personal, behavioural and educational goals.
Support pupils during periods of dysregulation, anxiety or emotional distress using agreed strategies.
Promote positive attitudes towards learning, attendance and behaviour.
Support restorative approaches following incidents or conflict.
Promote positive behaviour and celebrate successes and achievements.
Contribute to safeguarding and welfare arrangements for pupils.
Family and Multi-Agency Working
Maintain accurate records of mentoring sessions, interventions and student progress.
Monitor the effectiveness of support strategies and interventions.
Ensure confidentiality is maintained in accordance with GDPR and safeguarding requirements.

Safeguarding

Promote and safeguard the welfare of children and young people.
Adhere to all safeguarding, child protection and health and safety policies.
Report concerns promptly in line with organisational procedures.

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications

GCSE English and Mathematics (Grade C/4 or above) or equivalent.
Relevant qualification in education, youth work, mentoring, counselling, childcare or a related field, or willingness to work towards one.
Must hold a full clean driving licence.

Essential Experience

Experience working with children or young people facing barriers to education.
Experience supporting pupils with social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs.
Experience of managing challenging behaviour positively and effectively.
Experience working as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Essential Skills and Knowledge
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to build positive and professional relationships with young people.
Understanding of trauma-informed and restorative approaches.
Knowledge of safeguarding and child protection procedures.
Ability to motivate and engage disengaged learners.
Strong organisational and record-keeping skills.
Ability to remain calm under pressure and respond appropriately to challenging situations.
Desirable
Experience working within an alternative provision, pupil referral unit (PRU) or specialist setting.

Working Pattern

Full-time, Part time - In term-time only plus INSET days (or as agreed by the employer).

The Learning Mentor plays a vital role in helping vulnerable and disengaged young people reconnect with education, develop positive life skills, and achieve successful outcomes both in school and beyond.

Pay: £13.50-£15.50 per hour
