Healthcare Security Officer / Enhanced Care Safety Officer
Location: Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust – Torbay Hospital, TQ2 7AA
Shifts: 07:00–19:00 (days) and 19:00–07:00 (nights)
Pay rates:
- £13.60 per hour (Monday–Friday) – Band 3
- £18.36 per hour (Saturdays and nights)
- £22.99 per hour (Sundays)
About the role
As an Enhanced Care Safety Officer (ECSO), you will play an important role in helping to deliver safe, high‑quality one‑to‑one or enhanced care for patients who need increased observation due to mental health, cognitive, or behavioural needs.
Working closely with the Enhanced Care and Security teams, you will help maintain a safe, dignified and therapeutic environment for patients, visitors and colleagues across the Trust. The role can be demanding, but also highly rewarding. It is ideal for individuals who are calm under pressure, compassionate, emotionally resilient and physically able to meet the demands of the position.
This is a temporary but ongoing placement with consistent work and potential long‑term opportunities.

Key responsibilities
- Respond professionally and empathetically to incidents involving distressed or challenging patients
- Provide therapeutic engagement and de‑escalation support
- Carry out enhanced observations (Level 3 or 4) to support patient safety
- Maintain a calm and reassuring presence in high‑pressure situations
- Complete dynamic risk assessments and escalate concerns appropriately
- Accurately record observations, interventions and incidents
- Work collaboratively with nurses, security colleagues and mental health professionals
- Use radios and body‑worn cameras in line with Trust policies on safety and confidentiality
What we’re looking for
Essential:
- Experience in customer service or other front‑facing environments
- Experience working in physically and mentally demanding settings (e.g. healthcare, security, emergency services)
- Valid SIA licence (Door Supervision or Security Guarding)
- Physically fit and able to meet the demands of the role
- Confident in conflict resolution and de‑escalation
Desirable:
- Previous NHS or healthcare experience
- Training in safeguarding, therapeutic engagement or trauma‑informed approaches
- Understanding of mental health legislation or enhanced observation protocols
