Job Overview
Join our retail team and play a key role in delivering an exceptional visitor experience through outstanding customer service and effective retail support across the Cathedral site. Working on a part-time basis across two days each week, the postholder will assist with the day-to-day operation of the gift shop and online store, ensuring accurate stock management, transaction processing, order fulfilment, and product presentation. The role requires close collaboration with colleagues across the Cathedral, including Visitor Experience, Café, and Verger teams, to provide a welcoming and engaging environment for visitors while contributing to retail sales targets and supporting digital retail activity. The postholder will help maintain high standards of service, safety, and operational efficiency, supporting the continued success and development of the Cathedral’s retail and e-commerce functions.
Duties
- Deliver outstanding customer service across the whole site of the cathedral, collaborating with the Visitor Service team to ensure each visitor has an enriching experience.
- Support daily retail operations in compliance with company policies of Health and Safety, Cash handling, retail code of conduct.
- Accurately process transactions using EPOS systems, any errors to be reported to Manager/Senior Retail Assistant.
- Maintain high standards of stock presentation and store cleanliness, undertaking these duties during quieter trading periods.
- Receive, process, and label stock deliveries, paperwork to be filled in accurately any damages/discrepancies to be reported to Manager/Senior Retail Assistant.
- Monitor for theft and follow established security procedures, reporting to Manager/Senior Retail Assistant, if required follow through to the CCTV City Link or Police.
- Working together as a team to drive sales and upsell to help towards retail performance, by interacting with the visitors and where possible assisting with personal shopping, helping to maximise sale opportunities.
- To undertake additional tasks by Senior Leaders should the occasion arise. Undertake such other duties as may reasonably be required to support the effective operation and ongoing development of the Cathedral’s retail/E-Commerce function.
- To liaise with the Vergers, Café, and VE team on closing procedures at the end of day.
Requirements
- Experience and Knowledge Experience of working in a customer-facing retail, hospitality, visitor attraction, or similar environment.
- Experience of handling cash and processing transactions accurately.
- Understanding of the importance of excellent customer service and visitor engagement.
- Basic understanding of stock control, merchandising, and retail operations.
- Experience of using computer systems and confidence in learning EPOS and online retail systems.
- Skills and Abilities Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage positively with a wide range of visitors.
- Strong attention to detail, particularly when processing transactions, handling stock, and completing paperwork.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team and build positive working relationships with colleagues across departments. Ability to organise workload effectively and prioritise tasks during busy periods.
- Competent IT skills, including email, Microsoft Office applications, and web-based systems. Ability to follow procedures relating to health and safety, cash handling, security, and stock management.
- Ability to identify sales opportunities and confidently promote products to visitors.
