Job Description

Job Title: Youth Mentor

Primary Purpose of Job: JHF Mentors build trusted, consistent relationships with children and young people who are struggling to engage in education or daily life. Through a trauma-informed, relationship-led approach, mentors help young people feel safe, build confidence and resilience, and take meaningful steps towards positive change.

We are looking for Youth Mentors to join our team in readiness for a September 2026 start.

Reporting to: Programme Team

Hours: A range of working hours available, depending on placements – usually between 15-30 hours a week. Hours are mutually agreed in advance. Once agreed, placements take place at a consistent time each week, most often term-time only.

Contract: Self-Employed

This is a self-employed role. Mentors are responsible for managing their own tax, National Insurance, and invoicing.

Rate: £16.82 per hour (increase pending 01/09/2026)

Person Specification

Our mentors came from all types of backgrounds. We embrace diversity of age, gender, race, religion or belief, sexual orientation and identity in order to positively promote young people’s self worth, individuality and potential.

You will support young people to improve engagement, build confidence and develop key life skills. This may involve working in schools, in the community or at home, and collaborating with families and professionals to achieve agreed outcomes.

You will need to work independently, manage your time effectively, and adapt your approach to each young person. Our work is bespoke and relationship-led, so you must be comfortable with uncertainty and able to respond flexibly to need.

This role may suit individuals who have experience in:

Youth work, education, or pastoral support
Social work or police background
Coaching, sports, or community work
Supporting young people with additional needs
Lived experience relevant to the young people we support

Skills required

Experience supporting young people (either personally, professionally or as a volunteer)
Ability to build positive relationships with young people and their families/carers
Good oral and written communication skills
Awareness of safeguarding responsibilities and commitment to safe, professional practice
Competent IT skills for session reporting
Ability to work independently and use your initiative
Confident, calm and positive presence
Valid UK drivers’ licence and use of a car for work
Right to live and work within the UK

Desirable:

Experience working with young people with special educational needs
Practical knowledge of safeguarding and child protection
Enhanced DBS Certificate on the update service

Responsibilities

To maintain accurate records for reporting and safeguarding purposes and complete records in a timely manner
To plan and deliver mentoring to an agreed work programme
Maintain professionalism and represent the values and objectives of the JHF
To be responsible for your own invoicing and comply with self-employment regulations
To undertake any other duties within the scope of the role
Demonstrate a strong understanding of professional boundaries and safer working practice
Work in line with JHF safeguarding procedures and statutory guidance (including KCSIE)
