Overview

We are seeking a dedicated SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) Teaching Assistant to support children with special educational needs within a school environment. The successful candidate will work closely with pupils who require additional behavioural and emotional support, helping them to access the curriculum and develop essential life skills. This role offers an enriching opportunity to make a positive impact on young learners’ lives while gaining valuable experience in special education. The position is paid and suitable for individuals passionate about working with children and committed to fostering inclusive learning environments.

Duties

Provide personalised support to children with SEMH needs, including those with autism and other disabilities.
Assist in implementing tailored behavioural strategies and intervention plans.
Support pupils during classroom activities, ensuring they remain engaged and included.
Foster a safe, nurturing, and positive environment conducive to learning and emotional development.
Collaborate with teachers, therapists, and other professionals to monitor progress and adapt support strategies accordingly.
Support children with toddler care needs where applicable, ensuring their well-being throughout the day.
Promote effective communication skills by engaging pupils in social interactions and encouraging self-expression.
Assist in managing behavioural challenges calmly and professionally, maintaining a consistent approach aligned with school policies.

Experience

Prior experience working with individuals with autism or other disabilities is highly desirable.
Experience in teaching or supporting children within an educational or care setting is preferred.
Knowledge of special education practices and behaviour management techniques is advantageous.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with children, colleagues, and parents/carers.
Experience working with young children or toddlers is considered a plus.
A compassionate attitude combined with patience, resilience, and excellent organisational skills are essential for success in this role.
