The Adventure Service Ltd is an independent social care day service specialising in delivering high-quality outdoor learning experiences through adventure-based activities.
We support Adventurers to develop confidence, independence, and personal growth through meaningful participation in outdoor activities. Each Adventurer is encouraged to engage fully in sessions from preparation and planning through to active participation and personal challenge regardless of perceived ability.
This role is based across our Day Services, supporting adults with additional support needs to access structured outdoor learning opportunities. Activities include mountain biking, rock climbing, abseiling, weaselling, bushcraft, canoeing, hill walking, archery, and other adventure-based experiences.
The Qualified Outdoor Instructor is responsible for planning, delivering, and reviewing high-quality outdoor education programmes while ensuring safe practice and positive outcomes for all Adventurers.
Key Responsibilities
Programme Delivery
- Plan, implement, and deliver learning through outdoor adventure activities.
- Instruct outdoor adventurous activities to high professional and safety standards.
- Design and prepare session plans, course materials, and teaching resources.
- Ensure the safe and effective operation of the service programme.
- Regularly review the progress of individual service users and make recommendations where appropriate.
- Liaise with Adult Social Care and relevant professionals as required.
Adventurer Support
- Support the care and social development needs of service users in collaboration with the management team.
- Encourage participation, independence, and personal achievement.
- Build positive and professional relationships with Adventurers, families, and carers.
- Provide personal and intimate care where appropriate and required.
Service Development
- Contribute to the ongoing development of the service and activity programme.
- Maintain relevant qualifications and ensure timely revalidation.
- Keep up to date with best practice in social care and outdoor education.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships internally and externally.
Safeguarding, Health & Safety and Compliance
- Comply fully with The Adventure Service Ltd policies and procedures.
- Promote equality of opportunity and inclusive practice.
- Apply Health and Safety practices within daily operations.
- Support safe working practices across activities and environments.
- Maintain confidentiality and professional standards at all times.
- Ensure awareness and application of safeguarding procedures.
- Recognise and report safeguarding concerns immediately.
- Maintain accurate safeguarding and incident records.
- Undertake required training, including first aid certification where necessary.
- Drive service transport as required.
Professional Responsibilities
- Participate in occasional out-of-hours paid work where required.
- Provide information necessary for employment administration and organisational requirements.
- Undertake additional reasonable duties commensurate with the role as requested by management.
What We’re Looking For
Essential Qualifications
- Basic qualifications in numeracy and literacy.
- Requirement to complete/have completed the Skills for Care Care Certificate.
- National Governing Body qualification(s) in two or more of the following:
- Rock Climbing Instructor Award/Climbing Wall Instructor
- Paddle Sport Instructor
- Local Cave and Mine Leader Award
- Mountain Bike Leader Award
- Bushcraft Instructor
- Hill and Moorland Leader or equivalent
Knowledge
- Understanding of confidentiality requirements.
- Awareness of Equality and Diversity principles.
- Awareness of safeguarding and Health & Safety responsibilities.
Essential Skills
- Sensitivity to the individual needs of disabled service users.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to identify and report key information appropriately.
- Accurate record-keeping skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with service users, parents, and carers.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Desirable
- Experience supporting people with additional support needs (professionally or personally).
- Knowledge of lone working, moving and handling, and risk assessment processes.
- Behaviour management skills.
- Ability to manage conflict appropriately.
- Skills in alternative communication methods such as Makaton, BSL, or similar systems.
- Full driving licence and willingness to drive organisational vehicles.
