Full job description

The Fountain | Ingbirchworth, near Penistone

We’re looking for an experienced and passionate Sous Chef to join the kitchen team at The Fountain.

We’re a busy village pub with a simple ambition: to serve really good, consistent pub food in a kitchen that is clean, organised and run to a high standard.

This is an important role within our kitchen. Working closely with the Head Chef, you’ll help lead the team day-to-day, maintain excellent standards of food quality and presentation, and make sure food safety, cleanliness and kitchen organisation are never compromised.

We’re looking for someone who genuinely loves food, takes pride in what leaves the kitchen and understands that a great kitchen is about much more than cooking.

What you'll be doing

As Sous Chef, you will:

Support the Head Chef with the day-to-day running of the kitchen
Take responsibility for the kitchen and lead service in the Head Chef’s absence
Prepare and cook dishes consistently to the required recipes, specifications and presentation standards
Help maintain high standards across our pub menu, Sunday lunches, specials and events
Ensure food is fresh, well prepared and something the whole team can be proud to serve
Maintain excellent standards of kitchen cleanliness, hygiene and organisation at all times
Ensure food is stored, labelled, dated and rotated correctly
Complete and oversee required food safety checks and kitchen records
Support stock control, ordering, deliveries and waste management
Help manage food costs, portion control and GP without compromising quality
Train, support and motivate other members of the kitchen team
Work closely with the front-of-house team to deliver smooth services and a great guest experience
Identify problems quickly and take ownership of getting them resolved
Support the Head Chef with developing specials, seasonal dishes and new menu ideas

What we're looking for

You’ll need to be an experienced chef who is confident working in a busy kitchen and comfortable taking responsibility when required.

Most importantly, we’re looking for someone with the right attitude and standards.

You should have:

Previous experience as a Sous Chef, Junior Sous Chef or experienced Chef de Partie ready to take the next step
A genuine passion for cooking and producing great food
Strong knowledge of food hygiene, allergens and safe working practices
Level 2 Food Safety certification as a minimum
High personal standards when it comes to cleanliness and kitchen organisation
The confidence to lead a service and support a kitchen team
A consistent approach to portioning, presentation and food quality
Good communication skills and the ability to work closely with both kitchen and front-of-house teams
The ability to remain organised and calm during busy services
A positive, hands-on approach — we’re looking for someone who leads by example
A willingness to take responsibility rather than wait to be asked
