Specialist SEN Tutor – Autism, Dyslexia & ADHD Experience Essential

Chatham, Kent (ME5 Area)
Home-Based 1:1 Tuition
15 Hours Per Week (3 Hours Per Day, Monday–Friday)
Competitive Hourly Rate

The Role

We are seeking an experienced Specialist SEN Tutor to support a Year 10 learner with an EHCP who has been educated at home for several years and is now preparing for a future return to formal education.

This is a highly personalised role focused on rebuilding engagement with learning, developing functional English and Maths skills, supporting communication and independence, and helping prepare for adulthood outcomes.

The successful tutor will understand that before academic progress can happen, trust, consistency and a positive relationship must be established.

About the Student

This young person:

Has diagnoses of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Dyslexia and ADHD (predominantly inattentive presentation)
Has been Electively Home Educated since Year 5
Has had very limited experience of structured education for several years
Is working towards Functional English, Functional Maths and Preparation for Adulthood outcomes
Benefits from patient, calm and highly structured support
Has no known behavioural concerns but may withdraw, shut down or disengage when overwhelmed

She enjoys:

Piano and music
Maths and Science
Interest-led conversations and activities
Learning at her own pace within a calm environment

Key Responsibilities

Deliver 1:1 Functional English and Maths tuition
Support life skills, independence and preparation for adulthood outcomes
Build confidence and engagement with adult-led learning
Adapt learning to suit Autism, Dyslexia and ADHD profiles
Use visual supports, modelling and scaffolded teaching approaches
Offer alternative recording methods such as typing, scribing and voice notes
Support communication, emotional understanding and social interaction skills
Provide regular progress updates and contribute to review meetings when required

Essential Experience

Applicants should have experience supporting learners with:

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
Dyslexia
ADHD
Sensory processing differences
Working memory and auditory processing difficulties
Emotionally vulnerable learners who have been out of education for extended periods

Experience with Elective Home Education (EHE), Preparation for Adulthood pathways or reintegration support would be highly desirable.

Teaching Approach

The successful tutor will:

Deliver learning in small, manageable steps
Use clear demonstrations and visual prompts
Build sessions around the student's interests and strengths
Maintain a calm, low-pressure environment
Prioritise engagement and confidence before academic demand
Use co-regulation and relationship-based approaches
Be flexible and responsive to fluctuating engagement levels

Sessions should follow a predictable structure:

Settled arrival and check-in
Short focused learning activity
Sensory or movement break
Further learning activity
Calm review and close

What We're Looking For

Essential:

Experience supporting Autism, Dyslexia and ADHD
Strong SEN tutoring or teaching background
Ability to build trust with learners who have been out of education for extended periods
Patient, calm and flexible approach
Enhanced DBS (or willingness to obtain)

Desirable:

SEN teaching qualification or QTS
Experience with Functional Skills delivery
Experience supporting learners transitioning back into education

Additional Information

Home-based tuition initially
Community venues or library sessions may be explored in the future if appropriate
15 hours per week
Monday to Friday
Session times to be agreed around family availability
Tuition is expected to continue until a suitable specialist placement is secured

Schedule & Availability

This placement requires 15 hours per week, delivered across Monday to Friday (3 hours per day).

Tutors must be able to work around the family's existing commitments and avoid the following times:

Monday: 1:00pm – 4:00pm
Tuesday: 11:30am – 2:30pm
Thursday: 10:30am – 12:30pm

All other weekday times can be considered and will be agreed directly with the family during onboarding.

Flexibility is important, particularly during the initial stages of engagement, as the tutor and student establish a positive working relationship and consistent routine.
