Job Overview
Fort Care Services is looking for an experienced Responsible Individual to provide part-time governance, regulatory oversight, and strategic support across our children’s residential homes.

This is an important role for someone who understands Ofsted expectations, children’s home governance, and the need for strong, visible leadership. You will work directly with the Directors and Registered Managers, providing clear oversight, challenge, support, and practical guidance to help strengthen the service and prepare for future inspection.

The role is expected to be around 4 days per month, with flexibility around which days are worked. The arrangement can be structured either as part-time employment or consultancy, depending on the successful candidate’s preference and suitability

Our model is rooted in trauma-informed and person-centred practice, with a strong focus on safeguarding, leadership, quality assurance, and continuous improvement.

Your Role

As the Responsible Individual, you will provide governance and strategic oversight across the organisation’s children’s homes. You will work closely with the Directors and Registered Managers to ensure the homes are operating in line with Ofsted expectations, The Children’s Homes (England) Regulations 2015, SCCIF, and the Quality Standards.

Providing RI governance and strategic oversight across the children’s homes
Supporting and challenging Registered Managers to improve leadership, management, safeguarding, and recording practice
Reviewing Regulation 44 reports, Regulation 45 reports, Ofsted feedback, internal audits, and quality assurance findings
Turning audit findings and feedback into practical, time-bound improvement plans
Holding structured governance meetings with Directors and Registered Managers
Visiting the homes regularly and providing clear, honest feedback
Supporting Ofsted inspection readiness and ensuring evidence is well organised and meaningful
Monitoring compliance with Children’s Homes Regulations 2015, SCCIF, Quality Standards, safeguarding procedures, and internal policies
Strengthening governance systems, leadership oversight, and management accountability
Ensuring that the organisation has a clear improvement plan and a strong evidence base for inspection
Promoting a culture of openness, accountability, reflection, and continuous improvement

What We’re Looking For

We are looking for someone who is experienced, confident, and able to provide meaningful oversight rather than simply “signing off” processes.

Previous experience as a Responsible Individual, ideally for a minimum of 2 years
Current or previous Ofsted registration as a Responsible Individual would be highly desirable
Strong experience within children’s residential care (Preferably EBD)
Proven track record of improving or sustaining Good or Outstanding Ofsted outcomes
Strong knowledge of The Children’s Homes (England) Regulations 2015
Strong understanding of SCCIF, Quality Standards, Regulation 44, Regulation 45, safeguarding, and Ofsted inspection expectations
Ability to challenge Registered Managers constructively while maintaining strong working relationships
Confidence in reviewing reports, audits, records, care planning, risk management, and quality assurance systems
Strong written reporting and governance skills
Ability to work within a small, owner-led provider where honesty, visibility, and accountability are important
Flexibility to attend the homes in person on a regular basis
Being within sensible travelling distance of Milton Keynes is important, as regular and meaningful home visits will be required

Qualifications and Experience

Essential:

Minimum 3 years’ experience in residential children Home
Strong understanding of children’s home leadership and governance
Driving licence and ability to travel to the homes
Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Residential Childcare, or equivalent

Desirable:

Current or previous Ofsted registration as Responsible Individual or Registered Manager
Experience supporting EBD children’s homes
Experience preparing homes for Ofsted inspections
Experience working with owner-led or growing children’s home providers

What We Offer

£350 – £450 per day, depending on experience
Approximately 4 days per month
