Location: Bicester
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience
Hours: Monday to Friday, on-site
My client is looking to appoint a Design Engineer with strong SolidWorks experience to support a busy engineering business delivering fabrication, machining, refurbishment, repair and customer site solutions.
SolidWorks experience is essential for this role. The successful candidate must be confident producing 3D models and accurate 2D manufacturing drawings using SolidWorks, with a practical understanding of how parts and assemblies will be fabricated, machined, welded, repaired or installed.
This role would suit someone with strong practical engineering knowledge who can produce accurate designs, drawings and manufacturing information for workshop and customer projects. The ideal candidate will understand how things are actually made, not just how they are modelled on screen.
My client works across a broad range of engineering services, including fabrication, welding, CNC and conventional machining, reverse engineering, pump and gearbox refurbishment, hydraulic refurbishment, mechanical repair, technical design and customer site work.
This is not a role that requires a motorsport or automotive background. Experience from motorsport, automotive, specialist manufacturing or low-volume engineering would be useful, but the real requirement is strong SolidWorks capability combined with an understanding of fabrication, machining, design for manufacture and practical engineering problem-solving.
As Design Engineer, you will be responsible for producing practical engineering designs, SolidWorks models, manufacturing drawings and supporting documentation for in-house manufacture, customer projects and supplier use.
You will work closely with the workshop, machinists, fabricators, welders, fitters, sales and management team to make sure designs are accurate, manufacturable and suitable for the intended application.
The role will involve a mix of new design work, design modifications, reverse engineering, jig and fixture design, manufacturing support and technical problem-solving.
Produce 3D CAD models using SolidWorks.
Produce accurate 2D technical drawings using SolidWorks for internal workshop use and external suppliers.
Support fabrication, machining, refurbishment and repair projects.
Design practical components, assemblies, jigs, fixtures and tooling where required.
Work closely with fabricators, welders, machinists and fitters to ensure designs are manufacturable.
Support reverse engineering activity from existing parts, samples or customer requirements.
Assist with BoMs, process information and manufacturing documentation.
Liaise with internal teams, suppliers and customers on technical matters.
Review designs with consideration for quality, cost, practicality and lead time.
Support technical problem-solving across varied engineering projects.
Contribute to continuous improvement of design and manufacturing processes.
Applicants must have strong SolidWorks experience and a practical engineering design background.
Relevant backgrounds could include:
Engineering services
Fabrication and welding
Machining and precision engineering
Industrial maintenance or repair
Pump, gearbox or rotating equipment refurbishment
Specialist manufacturing
Low-volume automotive, motorsport or performance engineering
Mechanical design for manufacture
Essential experience:
Strong SolidWorks experience
3D CAD modelling using SolidWorks
2D manufacturing drawings using SolidWorks
Understanding of fabrication and welding processes
Understanding of machining processes
Ability to design with manufacture, assembly and quality in mind
Strong attention to detail
Good communication skills with workshop, suppliers and customers
Practical problem-solving ability
Desirable experience:
Jig and fixture design
Reverse engineering
BoM creation and maintenance
Process flow or routing documentation
Sheet metal, tubular fabrication or structural fabrication experience
Knowledge of hydraulic, pneumatic or mechanical drive systems
Experience supporting one-off, batch or low-volume engineering projects
My client is looking for someone practical, accurate and technically confident.
The right person will be comfortable working in a varied engineering environment where no two jobs are exactly the same. You will need to be confident using SolidWorks, understand the realities of a busy workshop, ask sensible questions, and produce designs and drawings that help the team get work made correctly.
This role would suit someone who enjoys solving engineering problems, working closely with skilled tradespeople and turning customer requirements into practical, manufacturable solutions.
