MiTech Consultants is looking for a motivated and detail-focused Junior CAD Technician / Technical Documentation Assistant to support the engineering team with the preparation, organisation and checking of technical design and reporting documentation.
This opportunity may suit either a recent school or college leaver with a Level 3 qualification in Engineering, CAD, Design, Construction, Product Design or a similar subject, or a junior candidate with some previous experience using AutoCAD, Microsoft Word and Excel.
This is not a senior design role. We are looking for someone organised, reliable and willing to learn. Full technical training will be provided, but the successful candidate must be comfortable working with structured documents, drawings, tables, file names, revisions and checklists.
Main responsibilities:
- Preparing and updating AutoCAD 2D layouts under supervision.
- Working with title blocks, drawing numbers, revisions, viewports, layers, annotations and PDF exports.
- Inserting and organising drawings, photographs, maps, diagrams, screenshots and notes into technical documents.
- Preparing Word documents using templates, tables, images, headers, footers, captions and consistent formatting.
- Using Excel to organise information, create trackers, maintain checklists and prepare basic data tables.
- Checking documents for consistency, including names, dates, revisions, drawing references, file names and comments.
- Maintaining clear folder structures and supporting the team with document control.
- Applying review comments accurately and keeping track of outstanding actions.
- Preparing draft documentation packs for final engineering review.
- Supporting engineers with general technical administration and project documentation tasks.
Essential skills and attributes:
- Interest in engineering, CAD, technical documentation or the built environment.
- Good attention to detail.
- Good organisation skills and the ability to follow templates and procedures.
- Basic AutoCAD 2D or CAD experience, or a strong willingness to learn.
- Confident basic use of Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Ability to read simple technical drawings, layouts or plans.
- Good written English.
- Reliable, methodical and professional attitude.
- Willingness to ask questions when something is unclear.
- Ability to work as part of a small technical team.
- Desirable but not essential:
- Level 3 qualification in Engineering, CAD, Construction, Design, Product Design, Manufacturing, Built Environment or a similar subject.
- Experience using AutoCAD, SolidWorks or other CAD software.
- Experience preparing coursework, technical reports, drawing packs or project folders.
- Understanding of file naming, version control or document registers.
- Interest in infrastructure, buildings, electrical systems, technical design or engineering documentation.
- Previous work experience, placement experience or apprenticeship experience in a technical environment.
What we would be looking for:
The most important qualities would be accuracy, organisation, reliability and willingness to learn. The candidate does not need to know everything from day one, but they should take pride in producing clear, tidy and consistent work. They should also be comfortable checking details carefully and asking for clarification rather than making assumptions.
