About Emerge School

Emerge School is an independent school for pupils aged between 5 and 13 years, experiencing social, emotional and mental health difficulties. The school offers places for children from varying local authorities who have an approved Education Health Care Plan (EHCP).

Responsible to

Head of Education/Principal, Board of Directors, Proprietor

Principle purpose of the role

To deliver outstanding, inclusive teaching that meets the individual learning, emotional, and behavioural needs of pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), particularly those with SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) needs. The Class Teacher will create a nurturing, trauma-informed classroom environment that supports every pupil to thrive academically and personally, while contributing positively to the school’s holistic and therapeutic ethos.

High-quality, personalised learning plans are implemented and adapted to meet the evolving needs of each learner.
Classrooms are calm, structured, and safe spaces where pupils feel respected, valued, and supported.
Pupils develop confidence, resilience, and a love of learning.
Positive relationships are built with families and external professionals to support each pupil’s development.
The teacher models and promotes the school’s values, safeguarding responsibilities, and inclusive practices in all aspects of school life.
Staff contribute to whole-school development, demonstrating collaboration, creativity, and commitment to continuous improvement.

Key responsibilities

Teaching and learning

Plan, deliver, and evaluate creative, differentiated lessons that cater to the needs of pupils with diverse SEND profiles, including those with EHCPs.
Adapt and personalise the curriculum to ensure access and engagement for all learners, using appropriate strategies and resources (e.g. visual aids, assistive tech, sensory breaks).
Regularly assess and record pupil progress, using this information to inform planning and provide accurate reports to leaders, parents/carers, and professionals.
Create and maintain a positive, well-organised learning environment that reflects pupil needs and promotes emotional regulation.
Implement consistent, nurturing behaviour support strategies in line with the school’s trauma-informed practice and behaviour policy.
Promote pupils' communication, independence, and self-esteem through positive reinforcement and structured routines.

Pastoral and Emotional Support

Build strong, trusting relationships with pupils, offering a calm, supportive presence throughout the school day.
Promote mental health and wellbeing by embedding emotional literacy, self-regulation, and social learning into daily practice.
Identify, respond to, and report concerns about pupil welfare in line with safeguarding policy and statutory duties.
Actively contribute to the pastoral systems of the school, including pupil risk assessments, support plans, and transitions.
To ideally have experience of delivering exceptional outcomes for young people with SEMH and associated needs, across multiple key stages, particularly across the secondary educational phases.
To have experience of leading and/or delivering a core subject area across multiple key stages, including secondary age range experience.

Teamwork and Collaboration

Work closely with learning support assistants and therapists to ensure a cohesive, consistent approach to pupil support.
Liaise regularly with parents/carers to share progress, concerns, and celebrate achievements.
Engage with multi-agency professionals to ensure joined-up support for pupils, including participation in EHCP reviews, TAC (Team Around the Child) meetings, and external assessments.
Contribute to school life beyond the classroom, including enrichment activities, themed days, and wider school development.

Professional Development and Contribution to School Ethos

Actively engage in CPD and reflective practice to continuously develop teaching skills and understanding of SEND.
Participate in supervision, performance reviews, and whole-school training to uphold and improve standards.
Maintain high professional expectations of self and others, modelling respectful and inclusive engagement at all times.
Uphold the school’s safeguarding, equality, and health and safety policies.
