Support Worker – Specialist Care

Based: Winchester

Pay rate: £14.24 per hour

Hours: Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm

Are you a compassionate, patient, and engaging individual looking to make a real difference in someone’s daily life? We are seeking a proactive Support Worker to assist a vibrant young woman who enjoys the simple pleasures of life, from car rides to see the sheep to playing with her dolls and sensory bubbles.

She has several health conditions, including drug-resistant epilepsy and severe learning disabilities. She needs a support team that is observant, consistent, and ready to advocate for her wellbeing while helping her maintain her dignity and independence.

The Role

Your primary goal is to help this young woman lead a fulfilled and happy life. This involves a mix of clinical monitoring, personal care, and social engagement.

Key Responsibilities:

· Daily Living: Assist with personal care, dressing, and preparing meals.

· Health Management: Administer medications and monitor/document seizures, weight, and health cycles for her medical team.

· Communication: Utilize and learn Makaton signs (e.g., "yes," "no," "finished") and interpret non-verbal cues, especially regarding pain or discomfort.

· Behavioural Support: Follow a Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) plan.

· Community Engagement: Accompany her on outings to the park or for drives, ensuring her "important items" backpack is always ready.

The young lady is a person of routine and specific interests. She loves her food, her family (especially her Mum), and her iPad. Because she has a limited sense of time and struggles to distinguish day from night, she relies on her staff to provide a gentle but structured rhythm to her day.

The ideal candidate will be:

· A Great Communicator: Willing to learn the young lady’s unique way of speaking and use Makaton.

· Emotionally Intelligent: Able to remain calm and use distraction techniques if the young person becomes anxious or heightened.

· Reliable: She values consistency. If you promise an activity or an outing, it is vital to follow through.

· Respectful: Committed to protecting the young lady’s dignity at all times, especially during episodes of challenging behaviour.

Requirements & Qualifications:

· Patience

· Consistency

· Documentation Skills

· You will also need to have completed all your mandatory training, including a Care Certificate, and hold an up-to-date DBS check registered on the update service or be prepared to apply for one.

You will be part of a close-knit support network including the young lady’s family and healthcare professionals. You’ll spend your days engaging in sensory play, enjoying the outdoors, and helping a wonderful individual navigate the world safely and happily.
