Trade Counter Sales Assistant – Builders Merchant

Location: Walsham-le-Willows, Bury St Edmunds IP31
Job Type: Full-time, Permanent
Hours: 40 hours per week, Monday–Saturday (2 Saturdays per month required)
Pay: From £30,498.00 per year

Job Summary

We are recruiting a Trade Counter Sales Assistant to join our busy builders merchant trade counter and yard team in Walsham-le-Willows.

Clarkes of Walsham Ltd is one of the largest independent building and agricultural merchants in East Anglia, supplying trade and retail customers with a wide range of materials and products.

This role is ideal for someone with customer service, retail, trade counter, or construction supply experience, or someone looking to build a career in the builders merchant sector.

The Role

As a Trade Counter Sales Assistant, you will:

Serve trade and retail customers at the trade counter and in the yard
Provide pricing, product information, and basic technical advice
Process sales orders and payments accurately
Assist customers with loading goods safely
Support stock handling and general yard operations
Build strong customer relationships and repeat business

About You

We are looking for someone who is:

Customer-focused with strong communication skills
Confident working in a busy trade counter or retail environment
Willing to learn product knowledge (building & agricultural materials)
Reliable, flexible, and a strong team player
Positive with a “can-do” attitude

Essential Requirements

Good basic Maths and English
Basic IT skills
Ability to work Saturdays (2 per month)
Good communication and customer service skills
Right to work in the UK

Desirable Experience

Trade counter, builders merchant, retail sales, or customer service experience
Knowledge of building materials, construction, or agricultural supplies
Experience working in a yard or manual environment
Forklift licence (preferred but not essential – training provided)
