The Exchange, our specialist children and young people’s division, has been delivering school-based and community counselling services for over 15 years. Through this established and experienced service, we work in partnership with schools, local authorities, and communities to provide accessible, high-quality therapeutic support and contribute to a whole-school approach to emotional wellbeing.

Together, our services combine clinical expertise with a strong commitment to early intervention, prevention, and improving outcomes for children, young people, and families.

Role Summary

Job Type: Full and part time available
Work Location: South Wales, Newport and Merthyr

In this role, you will provide counselling and evidence-based therapeutic support to young people in schools and communities in South Wales.

Key Responsibilities

· Deliver high-quality, evidence-based counselling interventions to children and young people, in line with ethical standards and best practice guidance outlined in the School-Based Counselling Toolkit.

· Contribute to a whole-school approach to emotional wellbeing, working collaboratively with school staff to promote a safe, inclusive, and psychologically informed environment that supports all learners.

· Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential clinical records, including appointment attendance and session notes, in accordance with organisational policies and professional standards.

· Use recognised outcome measures and service evaluation tools to support therapeutic practice, monitor progress, and contribute to continuous service improvement.

· Actively promote emotional wellbeing within the school community through universal and targeted activities (e.g. assemblies, classroom input, staff engagement), supporting early intervention and prevention.

· Participate in multi-agency and school-based meetings, including triage discussions and child planning meetings, contributing clinical expertise to inform decision-making and coordinated support.

· Contribute to individualised support plans, providing clear, proportionate recommendations for young people, families, and school staff in line with the young person’s needs and context.

· Build and maintain effective, collaborative relationships with school staff, parents/carers, and external professionals to ensure integrated, child-centred support.

· Contribute to safeguarding processes, recognising and responding appropriately to risk in line with organisational and statutory procedures.

· Support the wider school community by attending relevant events (e.g. parents’ evenings, wellbeing sessions), strengthening engagement with families and promoting service accessibility.

· Manage and prioritise a caseload effectively, including scheduling sessions within school settings and liaising with parents/carers as part of the therapeutic process.

· Engage in regular supervision, reflective practice, and professional development, maintaining compliance with professional body requirements and contributing to service quality.

· Contribute to service development and quality assurance activity, including feedback, audits, and implementation of best practice aligned with national guidance.

Essential Training & Qualifications

· A Diploma-level (or equivalent) qualification in counselling, psychotherapy, or counselling psychology, accredited by a recognised professional body (e.g. BACP, BPS, UKCP or equivalent)

· Advanced training in working with children and young people (CYP) or demonstrable equivalent experience delivering counselling in child-focused settings

· Current membership of an appropriate professional body (e.g. BACP, UKCP, BPS or equivalent)

· Hold, or be actively working towards, professional accreditation (e.g. BACP accreditation)

Essential Requirements

· Demonstrable experience delivering counselling or therapeutic support to children and young people

· Ability to build and sustain positive, collaborative relationships within school environments, contributing to a whole-school approach to emotional wellbeing

· Knowledge and understanding of the factors impacting children and young people’s mental health, particularly within educational settings (e.g. safeguarding, additional learning needs, trauma, and social/emotional development)

· Ability to deliver interventions in line with recognised good practice, including the School-Based Counselling Toolkit and ethical frameworks

· Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage a caseload effectively and maintain accurate records

· Effective communication skills, with the ability to engage sensitively with children, families, school staff, and multi-agency partners

· An enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check is required for this role

· Ability to work flexibly within school environments, including managing occasionally challenging situations in a calm, professional, and therapeutically informed manner

· Commitment to safeguarding, confidentiality, and professional boundaries at all times

· Willingness to engage in ongoing supervision, reflective practice, and continuous professional development
